Driving south on I-75

Alas, our budget will not enable us to fly so we will be driving for 10 hours. We will get on 75 around Collumbus, Ga. coming from Bham, Al. Does anyone have any eating suggestions, cheap towns for gas, places to look out for radar, road construction, etc? In other words, any words of wisdom for the weary travelers with a 5 year old, a 19, 21 and 22 year old on board?

LRTJS I would recomend that you take I-20 to Atlanta and then take I-75 south. This would be a better route because it will be Interstate all the way. Also it will save you about an hour and a half travel time. Plus there are a lot of eating places along the way.:D :)

btbsmm-Thanks for the idea. I need to know how far it would be from Atlanta to Columbus. It would take about 2 hrs and 45 min. to get to Columbus from Bham and about two hours to get to Atlanta from Bham. 280 from Bham to Columbus is 4 lane most of the way.

LRTJS if you go to www.mapquest.com and click on the driving directions then put Birmingham in the from box and Orlando in the to box it will give you the directions the way I'm talking about. If you go to Columbus, once you get there you will have to take two lane roads to I-75. If you go I-20 to Atlanta and then take I-75 south it will be four lane interstate all the way and there will be lots of food and gas places on I-75. Mapquest estimates the time at 9 hrs.and 49 min. I hope that I'm helping you and not confusing you.:D

LRTJS,

IMO, Georgia is one of the worst states for speed traps. I guess they figure everyone is heading to Florida, so they should get your money as you are passing through... :)

One of our favorite spots to stop is the...I hope I have this right...Sunsweet exit. It's not too far (half hour?) from the Florida border. The only thing at this exit is a BP Gas Station...but it's also a produce center. They have peanuts, vidalia onions, all sorts of Georgia specialties, clean restrooms, etc... It's a nice 10-15 minute break on the drive.

Bruce

Thanks to both of you for posting, this is just the kind of info I am looking for! We will be on the lookout for police and the fruit/vegetable stand.
There is a possibility we may be leaving from Auburn, Al(have two kids in school there) instead of Bham. I will go to Mapquest and see what it suggest it that happens.
