Explanation of Fall break

This is for Matt,
The schools here are on a modified year round school schedule. They get a two week fall break and two week spring break. They also get another two weeks at Christmas and a longer time at Thanksgiving, but they only get two months out at the summer. They get out the end of May and they go back the end of July.

It makes for a less stressful schedule for the kids and more vacation time for the parents that don't cut into school time. They also use one week of each of the breaks as intersession to help those children who are behind get one on one instruction time to get caught up before the start of the new term. It works really good here. It's beginning to catch on with more school systems.

I originally put this in the "Mickey's Philharmagic" thread after you talked to lil brer and asked what is Fall break, but it got buried, so I thought I would answer the question where you were sure to see it.

Re: Explanation of Fall break

Fall Break has been a tradition in Texas for as long as I can remember... it started with "Fair Day" which was a school holiday to attend the state fair in October. We usually finish school by Memorial Day, to get out before the weather gets too hot, and then start back in the first week of August. By the second week of October, we're ready for a break. This year it's October 11-15... perfect timing for out trip to WDW !!! PapaPumba is about to do the single digit dance !!!!

Re: Explanation of Fall break

Our fall break here (Indiana) is scheduled at the end of the first 9 weeks. During our fall break we have 2 half days for parent/teacher conferences and then 3 days off school. It's usually the last week of October.

There are so many breaks nowadays. I think that here they schedule alot in case of snow days. We have to make up snow days and these extra holidays are good ways for the schools to schedule make up days.

Re: Explanation of Fall break

Thanks Lawwin.

That's really neat. I'd love to see something like that around here.

This past summer was terribly stressful on the 4 of us. We messed up on our plans to get them into a summer camp (long story) so they ended up spending a lot of time with their DGM and DGGM in an assisted living community. It's not that the "old ladies" are crazy or anything, but kids should be able to do more than entertain old folks all summer long.

They have so many more opportunities for sports and other "kid" activities when school is in session.

Lawwin, thanks so much for clearing this up for me. I hope you guys have a great trip.

Re: Explanation of Fall break

Here they have extended school during the summer. It a lot like older kids daycare, except it's in a school setting and they go on field trips and do enrichment activities and stuff like that. It is specifially designed for working parents. It is from 6am to 6pm mon. through fri. and runs during the school year before and after school and on school off days and snow days as well. It really helps out the working parents around here. The local rec center also has a day camp, but it is more expensive and doesn't run during the school year just during the summer and the school breaks.

Re: Explanation of Fall break

Hi Matt, mom is right we have fall break every year just like we have spring break every year. They usually are two weeks long and some of the schools here only have one week. I am lucky to get two weeks.
