ATA - Bankruptcy?
My Mom, who has never been to Disney, is going to meet us there in January. She gets a non-refundable airline ticket through ATA out of Midway in Chicago. Now they are talking about bankruptcy. Has anyone ever gone through this with any other carriers? Do you think they will honor her tickets? Another carrier take them over?, or is she just out of her money?

Re: ATA - Bankruptcy?
Well, yes ATA did file bankruptcy today, and it is really sounding like a dire situation. I have gone through this with US Airways, but their situation is not nearly so dire. There is not one thing that can be done.

Re: ATA - Bankruptcy?
Chicago news was reporting that, even though ATA filed backruptcy, all flights are taking place as usual. All tickets are being honored and "passengers should see no changes". They are reporting that Airtrans Airlines, formerly Value Jet Airlines will be taking over all gates and flights out of Midway in Chicago. You can see the full story on www.nbc5.com
Let me tell you, I certainly hope this is true, I have tickets for Dec 3 & Dec 7.

Re: ATA - Bankruptcy?
I live in the Indianapolis area (where ATA is based) and this story was the number one item on the news last night. From what I understand, they are planning on using Chapter 11 to get themselves back in financial shape. They have no plans to fold and have covered all flights. He was very adamant that they were staying in business.

Re: ATA - Bankruptcy?
United has been in bankruptcy for a while now, and they have continuted on. My understanding that it is a race between US Airways and Delta to see who can file first. Delta is losing over $600 million per quarter. US Air's stock is at less than $1.00 per share, and their entire company is value at about $57 million by the stock market. As a comparison, SouthWest is value at about $11 Billion!
Don't be surprised if we see a major airline disappear in the next year. Actually, only Southwest and JetBlue among the large airlines are in decent shape. Everyone else could have one bad quarter and be in bankruptcy.
