Driving from Northern Michigan to WDW
We have always flown into Orlando, but this trip is so long, we thought we would drive so we would have our car. Now, I am beginning to doubt myself on this decision. Has anyone driven from Michigan to WDW in between mid December and the first of January? For some reason, I seem to remember snow storms in Illinois around Christmas time last year that caused terrible driving conditions, but I could be wrong. Am I worrying over nothing? I feel like I am driving myself crazy over this trip, but I want everything to be perfect. It would not be perfect if we did not get there in time to use our tickets at MVMCP on Dec. 11th because we got caught in a snow storm or worse yet wrecked my Explorer and someone got hurt. I found flights from Detroit to Orlando for 118 Round trip but we would have to stay an extra 4 days and DH doesn't want to use another week's vacation and I am not sure I want to take another week off without pay. I feel so confused on what to do. We are almost at our 90 day mark so I am already going crazy trying to finalize all the plans and now I find myself worrying about this.

Re: Driving from Northern Michigan to WDW
I bet you'd be fine driving, as long as you allowed yourself some flexibility on how long the drive would take. Don't power through the road trip because you MUST be in Orlando on "Monday at XX:00!!" Allow yourselves time to slow if the weather is bad, or pull off and stay at a motel if necessary along the way. If you are lucky and get into Orlando before you thought you would, you can always spend one night in a cheapy hotel before you hit your resort.

Re: Driving from Northern Michigan to WDW
I agree with Robinmouse allow extra time for the weather just to be on the safe side. It would be nice to have a car down there. I would also keep checking out the airline, they may add more dates for that great rate. What airline is it? Good luck in you planning!!

You'll be fine, I'm sure. Just build a day or two into the plan in case of bad weather.

Re: Driving from Northern Michigan to WDW
Well - let's face it. It's winter. Who knows? If it makes you feel any better we're driving down in November for precisely the same reason. My dh and I are leaving our trip open, after 2 weeks at WDW and aren't sure when we're coming back, so we want our car. Hope for the best. Check out the weather before you go. But weather is the one thing you can't control. Last January I had to contend with a blizzard two days before we flew - so flying is no guarantee either. I have no doubt we'll be facing snow when we drive home, but, like us, you're probably use to driving in winter, so just use common sense.

Re: Driving from Northern Michigan to WDW
I'll be in the minority and say I would not drive. But, I will say that I loathe long drives and would not do it even if weather was not an issue. You are right, though, that last year we got a storm 2 days before Christmas that put traffic at a stand still. We live near Indianapolis. I would be paranoid that weather would delay me. I hope whatever you decide works out.

Re: Driving from Northern Michigan to WDW
Driving and flying would both worry me in the winter but myself, I would fly just because I would hate the drive. Flying would get me there much faster too! I'm sure if you decide to drive all will be OK as everyone said, just plan to take your time - just in case.

Re: Driving from Northern Michigan to WDW
I am drivng down from NJ on 12/26. I wish I could fly but right now the airfare costs are too high and the only way I am able to get this trip in is to keep the costs down. The upside to driving is having the flexibility to leave when we want or stay a little longer if we need.

Re: Driving from Northern Michigan to WDW
Well, I did it. We will officially be at Disney for a month now, but we are flying. I got a phenomenal deal on flights--$100 each round trip and the rental car was a steal. I got a full size SUV for less than the cost of a midsize for a month. The cost was 741.73 with all the taxes and fees already added in. We figured that it was cheaper for us to fly and rent a car and stay another week than it was for us to drive especially with the cost of gas. Can you believe it a whole month!!!!! I am SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Driving from Northern Michigan to WDW
Sounds like a great deal to me! I live in northern Indiana and I know I would probably worry the whole time I was at WDW what the weather was like up north. Hey, a whole month at WDW--life can't get much better than that!

Re: Driving from Northern Michigan to WDW
Wow a whole month! How great is that! Congratulations and have fun. If we could get airfares like that, I'd jump at it too.
We're still driving, but if we hear the weather's bad up north - heck, it won't take too much convincing to make me stay in Florida. Maybe until April or May.... ![]()

Re: Driving from Northern Michigan to WDW
I wish we could stay until April or May. I think I would be in heaven almost, but I don't think my principal would want a substitute teaching my class that long. For now, I will be happy with our month.
