Katrina news update

Today they evacuated all of the superdome today and moved them to the astro dome. I think that is so neat that texas helped out by giving their stadium in time of need. Everyones still suffering and now when the authorities try to hand out food and water, the people are shooting at them and their helicopters with guns saying "get my family off ". It's odd because you see these diasters all around the world thinking it would never happen to us, but then here we are now acting just like savvages in emergencie needs. People Looting stores shooting help, raping, in my opinion I'm not even sure if this now altantis city will even survive. I mean think about it, every time hurricanes hit, like Ivan missed New Orleans, Jeanne missed it, francais-missed it finally it hits and all diaster strikes. 80% (most likely dropping now) of the city is now completly under water. If this happens again, there will proabably never even be a new orleans. Anyways, just a little info on it and my opinion.

NOTE: 1 HOUR AGO WALMART DONATED FROM 2.5 MILLION NOW ALL THE WAY TO 17 MILLION DOLLARS!!!, EVEN AFTER 120 OF THEIR STORES IN THE SOUTH WERE LOOTED!

Re: Katrina news update

I think it really is sad. The people who are making New Orleans unsafe are probably just a handful of those there, but they are making it miserable for those just trying to help and get help. I will never understand why some people think they have the "right" to destroy others property and threaten their safety. I hope that they are able to help these people get out safely.
In some ways, should they really rebuild in an area that can be wiped out so quickly? Pick someplace higher, or build up the land under the city before rebuilding.

I go to school at FAU ...FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY ...GO OWLS...and the professors here have told us that students from the area are going to come down and finish their semesters at FAU...this surprised me...but a professor also told me that there is an email going around asking for people to open their houses to the victims...she was considering it...and I was just taken back:(

It says right now they are looking for housing within 300 miles, but, if you are further away, you can go ahead and list because some of the refugees might end up in other areas. I guess that makes sense.

they already have ended up in other places .. I dont guess they are what you would call refugees.. but we have hundreds, in our civic center, the convention center, the colleges and churches, all the hotels/motels ...even what I call "roach" motels are full.. across the stateline in Shreveport La. it is the same. and they are still coming.

Tink, I've been reading your posts, but until I looked on a map, I didn't realize how incredibly close to the situation you were.

Are you ok??? This has to be so hard for you to see all these people...and not know what to do, or how to do it.

Re: Katrina news update

I am suppose to be sleeping, but I just can't stop crying. It is so sad, and I just don't understand why our government rushes to the aid of other countries and its dragging its feet for our own people. I just saw a bunch of children in a hospital in NO have passed away because the electricity went out and shut off the machines that were keeping them alive. It is not right that our country is so unprepared for something like this. I just do not understand it.

Re: Katrina news update

I am surprised how unprepared this country seems in response to this disaster. It's scary! My heart aches for all these people.

I wish I were closer so I could open my home to people who need it. I don't have much, but it's a lot more than most of them.

Wow. 17 million from Wal-Mart. That is incredible. Thumbs up!

Re: Katrina news update

I was in bed this morning watching the coverage and they mentioned the word "airport." It hit me like a ton of bricks! MY DISNEY TRIP!! We fly out of New Orleans in Dec. I wonder how this will affect my trip. Will the airport be up and running? Will we have to change our flight? They were talking about what would happen if they didn't rebuild NO and how much that would hurt La and how businesses like the airport are such a major part of our state. Got me thinking......

The air ports were completly underwater, they said it could take 3-6 months to rebuild that +the whole city so i dont know.

And guys about our government, no one could be prepared for this kind of diaster. Like the CEO of walmart said, people are suffering from a crisis and the governement is helping in any way they can, but the people are turning it into a political problem, which has nothing to do with this what soever He said that on Cnn last night. And I believe him. Just because we may look like this almighty country, we're not. No one is prepared. London wasn't when they were bombed. The asia's werent when the tsunami hit. This is a natural diaster not the governments fault, and they are trying to solve it just like everybody else, bush has already set up a campaign with bill clinton and the orginal bush if you knew that, they were talking about it last night on cnn as well.
