WDW first timer

Hello Disney lovers! I'm 2 days shy of 34, and I'm taking my first trip to WDW in 66 days! Wa-hoo! There are 7 in our party, with kids 9, 5 & 5. Our 5 year old twins, Grandma and myself are having breakfast at the Royal Table, and my 9 year old son was feeling left out. I booked the Pirate Treasure hunt for him, but he's thinking he might be too old for it. Can anyone tell me if it is worth the money, and if a 9 year old would find it exciting?

Thanks!
Darlene

Hi and welcome!!! To be honest, I think 9 is pushing it. Maybe go play a round of miniature golf with him.

Re: WDW first timer

Thanks, I hate to spend close to $30 for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich lunch that he's not going to enjoy.
I'm reading anything I can about Disney and hope I haven't over-planned! We have 3 character meals, plus the princess b-fast. We're doing the Very Mickey Christmas and the Holidays around the World. We're going to MK twice, Epcot twice, MGM and AK once. My FIL and hubby want to golf, too. I don't know where they can fit it in! I want to see all the parades, and all the nightly park things (parades/fireworks). I hope we can do it all?

Yeah, the overplanners get their start here - you're definitely in the right place, so WELCOME!

My 10 year old says he's NOT going on the pirate cruise, because he's definitely too old. I'd have to agree.

Go to www.allearsnet.com and look it up - it has a few pictures, and you can tell that it's something for a little younger of a crowd. I say this not really knowing your son, obviously - but, I have a rather immature 10 year old (not in a bad way, he's just quite young for his age) so, if he thinks he's too old - I bet your kid is, too!

Re: WDW first timer

Welcome to Disney Central. First timer? OH wow! There is nothing as magical as your first trip to WDW. The best advice I can give you is to get these two guide books : unofficial guide to WDW and the passporter. Do your research and your homework. The more prepared you are for the trip, the more enjoyable the experience. Make priority seating or ADR's as they are called now for any character meals that you want. Make a list of must-do attractions and do them. Don't expect to do everything at WDW on your first trip...not possible, but always make plans to go back again and hit the things you didn't get to do. Have a great trip.

I have a 7 year old and he loved the Pirate Cruise but I have to say all but one child looked to be between 5 and 7. All the kids are about the same height but one and that young man looked to be about 12--he was so much older looking. Here is a group picture from my DS's cruise.

Isn't that always the way?? I've been on several trips and am STILL hoping we can "do it all!!" What I always find to be the truth is that we never get everything done, but we always have a great time and have stuff left on the docket for next time! Have a wonderful time with your family!!

By the way, WELCOME TO DC!!

Hi twinsplusone, we took our twins the first time to WDW when they were 5 as well. What fun they had. It was the best trip.
I don't know about the Pirate hunt but anything at Disney is done well.

oops and welcome to DC and HAPPY BIRTHDAY a little early~

Re: WDW first timer

Thanks for the welcome everyone! I love the picture of the pirate cruise, thanks Stephanie! Zach would rather hang with the big kids than be "stuck" with the little ones, so I think I'll change those plans. We have all the ADR's set, did that the first day we could. I think I'm more excited than the kids because I've been doing all the reading, planning, etc. I'm sure the whole trip will be an exciting adventure. My dh and I took the kids on a Disney cruise 2 years ago, but wanted to save WDW for when they could handle the walking, and the fact that grandma and grandpa wanted to experience it too!

Re: WDW first timer

To echo some of the overplanners' comments.

GO WITH A PLAN! Have a detailed, day-by-day approach. But also be ready to chuck the plan and go with the flow. What I mean is, a plan is meant to maximize your vacation, not control it. If you're suppose to be riding Tower of Terror at 2:00, but you're kids are whiney & tired, go take a nap! Also, you'll never see all of WDW in one trip. So don't try--you'll just wind up burning yourself out and wanting to go home.

BTW, I know what I'm talking about. I don't even have an official trip booked in January, but this past week I've spent every evening micro-managing an 8 night camping trip to Ft. Wilderness, right down to meal & nap times! Just another proud overplanner!
