The book, "Disney, the mouse betrayed"
I was wondering if anyone else has read this book and what you thought of this book? I recently read this book while on a business trip.
It paints a terrible picture of the "New" Disney company and of Walt Disney World behind the scenes. The book refers to "the NEW Disney" since the time of Michael Eisner taking over. There is substaniating evidence included in the back pages of this book that incrimenate employess from the management level down to the workers in the park. Quite disturbing!! If you've read this book, do you believe all of the information or not? Or does anyone out there have any more information on the authors, stories, etc..........?

I have this book and even though I LOVE WDW I feel it is necessary to read ALL info about subjects. I am sure many if not ALL of these things have happened. However, I feel it is no different than any other industry. There are always some idiots that get through the cracks. WDW is a business after all, and its the advertisings job to make everything sugar coated and the accountants job to increase the bottom line. I take this book as an eye-opener. An alert to be careful, because no place is perfect. No matter where you go especially with children you should always be alert, even at wdw. If you really checked out the Orlando areas for hotels and crime I am sure you would be amazed by all the awful things that happen to families. But of course where tourism is so key to this area, I am sure not much gets leaked out . As far as the safety, I saw a great incident when my friend and I were on Space Mountain. The supervisor or whoever was in charge was very upset about some safety issue and took action on the employees right away. I am sure I wasn't meant to hear or see anything, but I did and was happy to see safety was a concern. Did I hate WDW after reading this book? No Just became more aware and grounded. I still love WDW but I am always aware.

I was wondering if the book mentioned any muggings, kid napping, etc?? I had just told my husband yesterday that you never hear of anything bad happening at Disney but with all the people and kids it is hard to believe, and I guess it is too good to be true. I just like to know these things because it reminds me to never let my gard down no matter where we are.
We are from a very small town and thus I guess too trusting. But last year we were on our way to Daytona Beach and stopped at a Cracker Barrell off of I-95 in St. Augustine. We went in to have a lunch and came out to find a cop standing beside my parents van. My sister had left her purse in the floor board and someone was apparetnly looking for that sort of thing and busted out the drivers window and stole the purse. We were floored we didn't expect that to happen at a CRACKER BARRELL!!! Any way can't trust anybody now, anywhere! |

The book mentions a lot about sexual harassment, pedophilia,
lack of safety concerns for the mighty dollar, covering up safety problems, the wdw companies supporting porn industries etc. I agree with you WillbeGone: I am from an area not so populated( but it's getting there actually, "sigh"). Always keeping four eyes on my son. Happy New Year! |

I didn't read this particular book but I have read Mouse Tales and More Mouse Tales which are about Disneyland. I worked Security for Six Flags during college and found it hysterical that many of the events that went on during that summer also took place in the Happiest Place on Earth. I look forward to finding and reading The Mouse Betrayed. To get another glimpse of Disney under Eisner, read The Disney Touch. I know, right now, many people are upset with the shape of the company but lets remember that if it wasn't for Eisner, Disney may no longer be in existence or in American hands. The vultures from Drexel Burnham were circling the company in the early 80's and were ultimately indicted for the S&L scandals. It's good to read up on a company and it is always wise to be aware of your surroundings. Though they try their hardest to keep their guests safe, remember, a bad seed still has the money to rent that room next to yours.
For me, I've considered Downtown Disney the least safe. Like a strip mall, there is no entrance fee and so the general public can freely roam in and out. :) |
