more flying questions
Hi Again!
I was reading the information available on-line about airline safety procedures...and I have a few questions. *Will I set off the metal detector if I wear items such as jewelery (rings, necklace, earrings, watch) or clothes with zippers (jeans, boots)? *Will I be able to lock my luggage or should I leave the locks at home? *Will we run into any problem with our electronics (cel phone, camcorder, camera)? Thanks for the help!

Hey Trish! Just a couple of things I've heard/experienced:
1. I always wear my jewelry (since it's all Disney anyway!) & have never had any problems. My DD even wore warm-ups with snaps all down the legs & never had any problems. One time she did, however, wear one of those belts with the double row of metal eyes all around it & wound up having to take it off before they would let her through. 2. With the new machines your checked luggage has to go through DO NOT put your unexposed film in checked luggage. Keep it in your carry on stuff & you'll be fine. As far as electronics, also carry those on. You'll probably be asked to remove them from their cases & maybe even have to turn it on so they see it works, but other than that... 3. I'm hearing them say not to lock your luggage, but just can't bring myself to do that. I bought some MM locks that were relatively inexpensive at WDW & put them on. I figure if the have to break in for some reason they can & the locks will be easily replaced. But I don't like the idea of a zipper catching on something & all the contents of my luggage spilling all over the place. Also, it makes it just that more difficult for someone to reach in & take something out. Just my thoughts....:angel :angel

Hey TrishB...
Well we made it back. I was going through the "missins WDW blues" so I didn't come back to Disney Central for awhile.. Anyhoo.... Just look at flying this way... the easier it is ..the quicker it will be. I wore some jewerly, my daughter has braces , and my husband has a small metal plate in his leg and we got through ( don't know if that was good or bad ;) ).... But the simplier you can make it the better you will be. I learned the hard way about the film. A dear friend gave my daughter disposable cameras before we left and I left them in the luggae .. only 1.2 of the film turned out..... Good luck... |

My whole family just got back from WDW and we used southwest airlines. We all wear jeans with zippers, no problem with them. As of Jan 1ST , NO LOCKS on any luggage.

I have recently heard about the requirement to have no locks on luggage or they will be set aside to be rigorously inspected (looted if you ask me). This concerns me though. I can recall that not too many years ago, there was a show on the high rate of theft by luggage handlers. They showed undercover tape of handlers picking through unlocked suitcases for worthy items, and leaving with garbage bags full of stuff. I can't believe that this problem somehow magically disappeared since 9/11.
I would suggest that you put all valuables in your carry-on luggage. If you buy a lot of expensive souvenir items on your trip, I would think seriously of sending them home via UPS, Fedex, etc., prior to your return trip. As for film, put all of your used and unused film in separate, clear ziplock type bags and hand them to the baggage inspectors. They will bypass the x-ray machine and use a sophisticated machine to sample the odors of the film for the presence of explosives.

Thanks, Minnie! I found that site already...that is why I had so many questions!:weird: Just wondering what practical experience says..
at least I'm not afraid to wear my jeans and boots with zippers. I would hate to be stopped by my underwire, though. How embarrassing!:o

I am sure keeping my fingers crossed that my pics turn out!!! I put my film in my suitcase (trying to keep my carry-on just a little lighter). I think one of the airports we traveled thru had already started the new procedures. I guess I will find out in a few days. I have found that using the luggage tags with the plastic tie things works fairly well in kind of "locking" the luggage. I run the little plastic thing thru the holes on the zipper and double it right over the tag. It can be cut off for an inspection, and it also makes it just a little harder for someone to just unzip your bag. ( I hope that wasn't too confusing)

OK, Just got my pics from our trip. Was worried about having my film packed in check-in- luggage. All was well, but I did receive a little info about film on a carry- on. I was told that any un-exposed film will be ok when exposed to the scanners till about 5 times. After more then that, your film could be damaged. Just thought I would pass that on. Hope it's accurate.
and trishb, u must be a young-un. Even my swimsuits have underwires:p |

I never even considered underwires!!! I've always worn them and never had a prob. getting through. Same with zippers etc. I've never locked my luggage either but then I also don't pack anything I would be sad to lose. The only valuables I take are the jewlrey on my person and my camera and video cam. which I carry on and haven't had trouble with my film through the scanners. I guess I'm lucky.
I saw something in the JCPenney catalog in the luggage section that looked good. They were luggage straps that wrap around the entire suitcase in case it gets opened in handling. Something to look into. |
