A Painful Disney Story

I wanted to share a little story with you guys. Back on March 6th I head off to participate in a basketball tournament. I get on the court and all is well. I cut through the lane and I get a nice pass but as soon as I stop to make a nice little shot I hear "Crack" and hit the floor. Everyone stops and looks at me like I had fallen down for no reason. I look down at my knee and it looks like my knee cap is gone! I immediately say "I'm hurt! Get me up!" They help me to the bench and put ice on my knee but my knee cap isn't where it’s supposed to be and I can barely bend my leg! After insisting that I'll be o.k (like a dummy) a couple of buddies help me to my car and I drive myself to the hospital is excruciating pain!! I just figured I dislocated my knee cap and they would put me to sleep and pop it back in place, no worries. After a few X-Rays the doctor says "I don't have good news for you, you tore your tendon and the only way to repair it is surgery." Laying in the hospital my thoughts centered on a blown Disney trip in May and then lose of work.

After six weeks of sitting home bored out of my mind; its now Apirl and time for physical therapy. My first question to the therapist was am I going to be able to keep my vacation plans to Disney in May?! The therapist tells me it all depends upon me and how hard I work to rehab the knee. Keep in mind I'm on crutches and could barely bend my leg at all because it’s been in a brace for six weeks and is as weak as a wet noodle. The therapist tells me to try and bend it and my leg just quivers; he says I see we got some work to do.

After therapy three times a week I start to get stronger. I think I lost 12 pounds doing rehab trying to get stronger so I don't miss my Disney trip. I remember sweat dripping down my face as I did reps thinking, "can't miss Disney, can't miss Disney, can't miss Disney." The therapist tells me to lie on the stomach and he takes my leg and starts to bend it towards my butt. At this point the pain is so bad I think I'm going to die but with the Disney trip in mind I say, "push it." AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! The pain is shooting up my leg through my back and into my brain!! Then I quickly say, " o.k o.k o.k o.k o.k!!!!" After a few weeks he says, "Mr. DayDreamer I think you'll be o.k for your trip.

May rolls around and we take our Disney trip and have a fantastic time. A few of the rides killed me because the car was kinda small on the ride and my leg was bent the whole time. Particularly Splash Mountain, I had to make a few adjustments while riding it because the pain started to come back. As long as I could stretch it out a few times I was o.k. All that pain and work just to see the look on my girls face for their first Disney trip. But it was worth it! Check out my stripe of honor in the picture below.

How old are your girls? They are cuties!!

Isn't amazing (and sometimes very sad) how little it takes to break ones body?
