Cautiously Excited

I was speaking to my sister this morning and out-of-the-blue she suggested that we all spend next Christmas at WDW! I was shocked!! My sister's a GREAT person, but not really a Disney person, so when she suggested that we start making plans I was really excited. Our two families combined would be eleven people (no children and we range in age from 21 to 50 something (she'd kill me if I told) and we'd probably rent extra points to stay in a grand villa at OKW. She's told me to start on the logistics! I'm excited - but cautious. So many things can happen in a year. Anyway - I'll be asking for a lot of advice on how to herd large groups around. Do you think it's too soon to plan? Should we have a deadline for commitment. Any advice from those who've arranged multi-family trips would be appreciated.

Never to early to start planning. We just went with 12 people and it was great. We do have kids though. I wonder if you can still do the Grand Gathering stuff if you are renting points.

If you can here is the link:

You could use the Disney Magical Gatherings Planner to help organize your trip. It was a lot of fun to use.

Here is the link to read about it and download it:

Re: Cautiously Excited

With a large group its never too early to plan. Everyone will have something different in mind especially if their not Disney fan. I'd start getting ideas of what everyone wants to do now that way you won't be disappointed if 7 of the 11 don't want to do anything Disney related most of the trip.

Re: Cautiously Excited

Oh that's exciting news!!

Of course you should start planning! A year is really not that long....it'll be here before you know it!

Most of our trips to the World are multi-family, so I may be able to offer some advice. My biggest tip for bringing along the whole gang is not to over plan. I had our first big family trip planned down to the minute only to discover that there were some people in our group that just wanted to sit around the pool, and didn't care about EMH (can you imagine!! ), and didn't want to go break-neck speed around the parks. I spent the first part of our trip trying to get everyone to try to follow the itinerary that they had asked me to come up, only to discover that it was better to let everyone do thier own thing and meet up later.

Schedule a few "must be at" character meals and special events, but you may want to wing it from there.

I think you're asking the wrong group. Everyone around here (including me!) seems to think it's NEVER too early to plan your next WDW vacation!

Heck, if someone said that to me, I'd have the whole thing planned- with spreadsheets- by the next morning!

Go with the cautious excitement! Do you have a date to move your emotional state to "slightly optimistic excitement"?

Thanks for the link R2G! That's amazing. I'm going to use that!

Tink74 I knew that you would be able to give me good advice. You'll be hiding from me. lol

Ok - I'll start planning - cautiously. My ds and I are best friends and our dhs get along well. The cousins haven't seen each other in a long time, but always have fun when they're together. (at this point, it will definitely include my nephew's girlfriend and my dd's boyfriend - and maybe others by that time. ) We're not the kind that would get "hurt feelings" if we went our separate ways - in fact, I hope we do some of that. But we also would have fun together. We took a trip to DL in 1992 when our girls were 7, 6 and 5 and had a wonderful time!

Re: Cautiously Excited

Just a piece of advice. The group needs to understand who is doing the planning (probably not you alone, but whoever is involved).

I would set deadlines for requests/suggestions about meals, lodging, and etc. With the understanding that once rooms are booked and ADR's made, there is no changing. (We've all read threads about BIL so-'n-so suddenly deciding he wants to be added to CRT 10 days in advance, and etc.)

I tried to do this with my family before my mom died. Everyone had their own ideas (though Lil' and I were the only two doing the research). In the end, I booked the resort rooms and ADR's for one meal each day.

Basically, the agreement was, do your own thing. Just be at dinner.
