Have you ever lost the Disney magic?

The thread about the worst thing you've ever heard in WDW got me thinking. Have you ever lost the Disney magic and had a less than perfect moment? Most of us are here because we are over planners and we want to plan the perfect trip. When things go wrong have you ever lost the Disney magic?

We always go in the summer when it's really hot and really crowded. I know that going in so I don't worry about the crowds and my DH and I are always on our best behavior even if we have to fake it now and then.

Here's my less than magical story.

Last summer we went for 13 days. We did really well the whole trip until one night at Restaurant Marrakesh. I lost my temper with my DS. We were with some friends and Nathan and their 5 year old had fought all week over the smallest things, who was going to push the elevator button, who was first out the door, who was in front of the other, who was more brave on a dark ride. I finally had enough when I looked over and my son was holding a blue (I still remember the color) crayon over his head and the 5 year old was climbing on him to get it. They were practically lying down on the bench with the family next to us. I snapped. I hopped up. I pointed my finger. I said MOVE. I was now the owner of one blue crayon.

I wasn't proud of myself but I had had enough. I'm not used to bickering since I only have one child. I lost my temper, I didn't make a fool of myself but I did lose my temper.

It's impossible to have children and not lose your temper occasionally. My boys (7 & 4) bicker often, and it drives me nuts. I think it's important for kids to see that it's OK to occasionally get upset and lose your temper, as long as you also model for them how to calm down, talk things out, and apologize if necessary .

Tempers will slip at WDW. When it's hot, you're tired, the kids are tired, the crowds get pushy, and so on. Happens to the best of us.

Re: Have you ever lost the Disney magic?

I have lost my temper a couple of times in WDW. Kids get tired and cranky there, it can't be helped a lot of the time. I always feel bad about it though. I have to say I have been stepped on, kicked, and pushed by kids in Disney (You know, the antsy kind that climb all over the queue areas ) and I never get mad at them - it is a lot for a child to be in the heat, standing in line all day long. My son sort of turns into a little monster in WDW for some reason......yet we just keep going back!

Re: Have you ever lost the Disney magic?

Whoops, I think I misinterpreted this thread the first time I responded... you meant have I ever "lost it" meaning like getting angry, upset, etc..

Well it takes A LOT for me to get angry or upset b/c I have SUCH a high tolerence for things but just last year.... picture this....

It's the third week of August, the temps haven't once dipped below 97 degrees, it had thunderstormed EVERY single day. Our passes did NOT include the water parks but in the middle of the week DH and I decided we REALLY needed a day to just "chill" at Typhoon Lagoon. We had gotten there at park opening, paid the admission fee and it was nearly EMPTY, so we were able to do every slide, tube ride, the reef, lazy river, etc.. by about 10:45 am. At 10:45 DH decided "I am bored, I want to leave!" Ummm, ok, I kinda lost it. We had JUST paid nearly $60 to "spend the day" at a water park and he wanted to leave after 2 hours and NOT come back that day. UGH, I could have sat in that lazy river ALL DAY, or on the beach part. NOPE, he wanted to leave. Anyway, to make a long story short, we didn't talk to each other on the bus ride back to AKL and it was a pretty uncomfortable day.

Re: Have you ever lost the Disney magic?

Once we waited close to 1 1/2 hours to catch a bus from Epcot to MGM for Fantasmic. We were very tired so we did not want to walk back through Epcot to take the boat to MGM. Needless to say, when we finally got to MGM, my DH had a "talk" with the transportation guy at MGM. Magic came back quickly the "talk".

Re: Have you ever lost the Disney magic?

I think as I've gotten older I've become more patient and have a better attitude when things don't go my way.

It's very hard when the little ones are hot, tired and cranky and you can't escape them! Now that my "little one's" are older, when they get on my nerves I can say "meet ya later"!

When I see or read about people really losing it at WDW I think they must be the one's who go in completely unprepared for the heat, the crowds and the cost. That will certainly add to you aggrevation level.

I have never really "lost" the magic, but I was there one time when it was my time of the month and it was one of the least happy times I was ever there.

Re: Have you ever lost the Disney magic?

We've never lost the Disney magic but one time DW had to apply a little heat to my 6 year old DD's bottom. She thought it was funny to keep walking off when we weren't looking and then watch us panic when we began looking for her. After repeated warnings DW had enough, needless to say she never did it again.

I'd don't think you lost it - I think that's good parenting. Let's face it - kids can drive you crazy - they're born with the gift. My girls are night and day - they could fight over anything. Once they fought over a stick. Now that they're older they look back and think it was hysterical. On Easter they had a contest to see how many "momisms" they could come up with: "Enough's Enough!", "I'm on my last nerve" and my favourite (I borrowed it from my mom) "You're an eternal nuisance" (ok I know that sounds terrible, but somehow it's said with love).

As for losing the "Disney magic". I only lost it once. When we tried to buy some DVC points on resale and Disney used their right of first refusal and bought them out from us. It took me a long time to get over that one...in fact, I'm still not over that one.... Although I knew that was a possibility, I felt totally betrayed

Re: Have you ever lost the Disney magic?

Ok, I admit it. I lost it at AK. It was our 4th or 5th day of non stop in Oct 2005. It was sooooo hot and humid. We had just got there with our group of 12. My DS was 6 and started to cry because his feet hurt and he wanted to go back to the room. I was all for it, but DH was not going to have us miss a day......needless to say some families around us saw daggers come out of our eyes at each other and I walked away with my DS leaving DH with the rest of the group. When DS and I got back to the room, we slept for 2 hours and felt great after.

After that I swore I'd never go back to WDW...................

Sure .....going back this Aug

Here's my less than magical story.

First of all I must tell you that this is the regular thing at my house. Who sit's in the right back seat, who in the left. Who enters the car first who comes second. We took care of that in a fun way, that's another story.

I think everyone is entitled to loose it now and then. Kids sometimes push it and putting them in their place without shouting and without getting physical and being mean to the kids, is not nessesarily a terrible thing. I am sure all the folks around you apreciated it

Having said that, I lost it in our room on the first night when my less than enthusiastic boys thought that it was not so kewel to take big boys to Disney. How embarrassing, what if their friends find out?
Guess who had a grand time
