How do you feel about it? The reason I brought this up is because I've recently had a friend tell me I will not get into heaven if I listen to "bad" music.

The music that me and my friend were discussing was goth/metal, specifically Marilyn Manson.

I personally have no problem with any music, I think if someone doesn't like a certain type or a certain persons lyrics, then they should just not listen to it. I listen to all types of music. Metal/Rock/Country/Classical/Jazz/Blues/Rap(i.e.Eminem). I don't think anyone should try and tell someone that they can't say something, like people try and get Eminem banned off radio stations.

This music has no affect on my behavior/looks/mannerism's. Why should anyone care about what someone else listens to? Anybody can say, "Aw dude that music sucks", and I have no problem. But when someone goes as far as to tell me I'm not going to get into heaven, that really makes me mad. Even though I don't believe in heaven(I do believe in god), for this person, who is devoutly catholic to tell me this, I am just at a loss for words.

p.s. Oh the person who told me this is a 13 yr old girl, and she doesn't know what she's talking about(yet), it just got me thinking about the issue and I wanted to see what everyone else thought.

I am sure many on this board have much more religious insight than I, but I think God is not so interested in the music you listen to than the way you live your life. If you are able to separate or comparmentalize the "bad" music you listen to compared to "real" life, I think you will be doing okay.

Remember, throughout your life there is always going to be someone saying that your choices are either wrong or that you should be doing things their way. Luckily, as an American, you have the CHOICE.

This is very controversial and you will receive many thoughts and opinions. It is possible that all of this will be deleted since it's somewhat off-topic. But... you asked so here goes:


God is interested in one thing:

You having a personal relationship with His son, Jesus Christ. Sure, that relationship will bring about changes in you, but it is the relationship and not changes YOU make that will get you into heaven. I am always amused at the "Saint Peter at the Pearly Gates" jokes but they are not supported in scripture.

You can't "earn" or pay your own way. If you could, why did Christ have to die?

You changing your music prefrences will do nothing. Changes brought about by Christ through the Spirit are what matters.

Scripture is very clear that many, on that day, will stand and attempt to enter based on their works, and will be turned away.

It's not about what you do, it's about who you know.

I'd certainly be interested in discussing this through email if this is deemed inappropriate on DC.
