Is your DD into Bear in the Big Blue House? We found the Potty Time with Bear video very helpful. Also, we realized that the Pull-Ups or other training pants hindered the process... except for nap and bed time. When we finally just swithched to big girl panties she kept them dry. She knew she could wet the Pull-Up and it wouldn't be a prob. After one or two accidents in panites she caught on fast. For the first week or so we took the potty into every room with us and made a big deal about every attempt. It also helped to limit fluid intake to scheduled times. Before potty training she was allowed to have her sippy cup pretty much any time she wanted but that had to change. Giving her times for drinks helped monitor when she would need to go because at first she had to be told... it's time to go potty, NOT do you need to go potty. I think the most impt. thing is to be consistent with your decisions about training pants. Before we swithched to only panties we confused our daughter by giving her a pull-up in the car or at church etc... It wasn't until we had a rule of only at nap and bed time that we found success. We waited until she could stay dry during naps then we eliminated that and then tackled bed time. When we used the last Pull-Up we had a goodbye Pull-up party complete with cupcakes and a special gift.
Good luck! |

PATIENCE! PATIENCE! PATIENCE! PATIENCE!
Need I say more. My son trained very quickly for urine at about 3yrs but spent almost 8 months withholding stool (wouldn't even go in a diaper!). We spent many tearful episodes in the potty with a very constipated hurting child and had to go through many uncomfortable doctors visits. Liquid Rx medicines, suppositors, and even enemas did nothing for us. It was H*LL for all of us. Then one day, after many bribes, candy, stickers, toys, ect. he just decided to go and never had a problem after that. Best little "potty goer" around now. I think its just a matter of good timing, a cool temper on the grown-ups part, maturity, and PATIENCE!!! They WILL learn this. I also agree about ditching the pull-ups and going directly to the REAL thing! Pull-ups are toooo confusing! Summer time is coming -- go "commando" (ie: naked) at home so there is no hinderance and accidents can't be hidden! (Plus they love to run around naked anyway!!) Take care, breath deeply, and realize that this phase to shall pass by all to quickly!! What seemed like a never ending nightmare for us at the time is now a distant memory!!! Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you so much!! Would you recommend panties for a daycare child?? She is in daycare and that is the only reason I haven't switched her yet. They have a little bathroom right there in her room so I don't think it would be a problem. Y'all are great I knew I could count on you!! :D

Hi Willbegone,
My DD had no problems, trained at 2 1/2 yrs. but my DS took a bit longer. I got rid of pull ups and put on training pants. Then I made a potty chart and a poopy chart. I picked out some of his favorite stickers and he would choose and put on chart. If he would fill up a row, something like 5 to 7 times, he would get a special toy. This seemed to work, but the poopy took longer. When he finally did it , he got a thomas the tank train. We told him if he went then he would get a train. I must add I started this process 3 times. If he would get really upset going into the bathroom, then I quit. As they say 3 times is a charm. When he finally did it, well, we haven't had a accident since. I started this process at 3. By 3 1/2 he was done!!! Just have a lot of patience!!! I Want to add, check with your day care and see what they would do for you. Janelle

Our daughter was interested in potty training around 20 months. She was fully trained (except at night, and she still isn't 100% and she just turned 3) by 26 months.
We did 2 things that really helped, some of which is listed above. #1) training pants.....no pull ups (except at night) #2) M & M's every time she went in the potty! (5 or 6 M&M's at a time!)

I feel for you! It can be maddening and frustrating to potty-train!:dazed
I would also recommend no Pull-Ups. DD needs to feel wet and uncomfortable so she will have more of a motivation to go in the potty. I used a potty-training book with the stickers with my DD but I don't know if that worked or not. What did work was a candy incentive - she loves Gusher's and she was restricted to them only after potty. Pee was much easier than poo. She took about 6 more months for that. She would ask for a diaper to go poo and then would go hide. Ohh the arguments we would be in! She would get constipated and I was pulling out my hair. Finally, when we got back from a week at Disney last June I told her no more diapers, she knows when she has to poo, so she must do it in the potty. It wasn't easy but finally she was trained. Good luck!

My DS was 3 years and 3 months and had NO interest in potty training. I waited until about 3 weeks before school was to start to decide we better do it or we would have to rely on the sitter to help. We switched to real underpants (no pull ups either) and stayed home for a week and just focused on that. We let him run around in just a shirt and underpants all week. A good trip to the bathroom was worth 5 skittles!! I would set the timer on the oven for 30 minutes on the first day and then increased it to 45 minutes then to an hour and so on. It took one week and we were done, no wet pants ever again. We did diapers at night for about 6 months after that, when we ran out one day I just said that's it- no bed wetting, you're a big boy now ( and took the night time sippy cup away).
I think if you try to start too soon it will take much longer. A friend of ours started her DD at 18 months, a year later they are still working on it. She wets her pants several times a week and has to be told to go most of the time. In this case I think the parents are trained not the kid. I think once you decide to do it just be consistent about it, it is hard for kids when the rules change all the time. Good luck!!!

LOL, I set the timer so I could take him potty. Time can get away from me and I wanted to stay on top of it. We started trying it every 30 minutes and worked our way up to me reminding him every hour and a half. Sometimes we would have luck going and other times he would just sit for a few minutes and not go. I would set the timer for another 30 minutes and try again.
Potty training was so hard for him. One day he just sat crying and said "Mommy, this is just too hard". I felt so bad for him. I wanted to say okay, we won't do it, we'll go back to diapers. I knew I couldn't do that so we fought our way through it.

stickers or some other reward for getting anything in the toilet not the floor, bed, sofa,car.....
DO NOT SHOW your frustration, it just makes it worse ' No Pull-ups, waste of time and money. I only used them at bedtime. Even still doing all the right things setting the timers and all of that I had one that wasn't fully pottytrained until she was 3'1/2 and one that decided at 28 months that he wasn't wearing diapers anymore and was fully trained, nighttime and all within 1 week. Kids just have different time frames for things. Good Luck angie

I guess it is so frustrating to us because everything else has been a breeze with her. She had done everything "early" except this. So really haven't had to work at anything else. I'm definetly going to try the reward system with candy and panties. Consistency is the problem with us, we haven't been at all. Thank you advice, and anymore ideas would be great~

This is going to sound gross, and you may want to wait for warmer weather to try it. It worked great with both of mine. My Yiayia told me to try this when I was frustrated with DS' potty training, and it worked great.
Let them run around with no bottoms on, with potties available in play areas. Ask about 15 minutes to half hour after any drinking or eating. Urge them to the potty if they show signs. Move the potties closer to the bathroom once the get the routine of recognizing they have to go. You will hvae to ask them frequently, and be extremely patient with cleanups. One of the problems with pullups and diapers is that it keeps them dry and comfortable, and they don't recognize the, or the process of elimination. They don't know they are doing it. Both of my kids took about two to three weeks of 'air time' (as DH called it) to get fully potty trained. DS was 3.5, DD was 1.5.

shared frustration
Willbegone,
If it makes you feel any better, my middle daughter now 3 years and 3 months still isn't potty trained. I have tried the reward chart that worked with my oldest, bribes, treats, you name it no luck. She goes on the potty once in awhile never for a bm though. It is horribly frustrating, but I know I am not alone and eventually she'll get it. I think I might try a whole week with regular panties and see what happens( more diffucult for the parents I think). I wish you the best of luck and just keep telling yourself, she will eventually figure this out and if that doesn't work, hop on DC to escape from the frustration. :laugh
