What is your town/city doing to show their support?
I was driving down main street in our small town today and a surge of patriotic pride was overwhelming. The entire length of main street is lined with American flags. The town had holes drilled in the sidewalks last year for flag poles to be inserted for special events. And ever since January the street is lined with American flags. I mean they are ever few feet (maybe three apart) and these aren't small flags! Also on each and every light pole there is a yellow ribbon! I was going to lunch today and I was amazed by how I would say 80% of the homes in our town have yellow ribbons and American flags displayed somewhere on property! I mean it just gives me pride to know I live in a town where patriotism RULES! :D

My wife bought a big roll of yellow ribbon today. I plan to take my kids through the neighborhood and ask if they would like a yellow ribbon tied to their tree. My hope is that our whole street will have a ribbon on every tree by the end of the day.

Our local Walmart is doing a support your troop box. We fill it with all the things they need, i.e. razors, lotion, sunscreen, toliet paper. Other then that, really nothing. It really is dissapointing. I fly our flag everyday, during good weather, and I really haven't seen as many as with 9/11. I wonder why? I feel this is part of 9/11. maybe others don't. I think I will start a yellow ribbon comittee in my community!!:heart :heart

My older son is at a regional robotics competition this weekend (it is very interesting, and educational--usfirst.org--the same guy that started this competition invented the Segway and that really cool wheelchair in the house of the future!) Their team handed out red white and blue ribbons AND yellow ribbons to the other teams, and had a tree to put a special yellow ribbon on that was given to all the other teams. Their team also has the Columbia patch on almost everything also. They gave out flags last year, and some of the teams have those flags on their robots this year.
Our city has had some supplies drives, but I don't know what else. Our schools have yellow ribbons around them. My point being that in the smaller venues there are statements supporting country and troops, but I don't see too much in the city. I am proud to say that our city council defeated a referendum (don't know if that was what it is officially called) to protest the war. Apparently a lot of larger cities were doing this. Next week is nationals here in Houston--I will let you know what was done there. |

People in my town are starting to put yellow ribbons on trees mailboxes etc. The only problem is that the stores are running out of the ribbons and they are starting to limit how many pre made ribbons or rolls of ribbons that you can buy.
A local radio station is doing a phone card drive. They drive around in their van and stop at different places around and if you bring them a pre-paid phone card they give you a bumper sticker, shirt etc. Then at the end of each week they are sending them to a base in town whom take their list of officers and sends them each 1 card so that they can call home. (When allowed) It seems to be working very well.

The main street where I live have put up lots of flags and yellow ribbons. I have on big oak tree in my front yard that has a flower garden around the bottom. All the flowers died this winter so I planted flags, and tied a yellow ribbon around the tree. Everyday when my DD comes home from school she says my flags are sprouting.

We were in Wal-Mart the other day and were fortune enough to see a worker putting out some yellow plastic ribbons for $0.88. They weren't there when we walked in. We bought 3 for the two railings and a lamp post. Needless to say, there weren't any when we walked out either. It made me happy to see people showing support.;pirate:

I found out that there is more going here than just the flags. Almost all of the churches here now have a military prayer list and our church prints out ours and puts in our bullentins so you can call specific names out of local military men and women in prayer. One of the high schools in a town not far from me has posted all the pictures and info. on all of their alumni serving over seas in their halls to remind the students of the impact the war has on local families. As a matter of fact one of the bodies found recently was of a young man from upstate SC not far from me either. There are also many of the blue star banners hanging in windows showing that a family member is serving over seas. There have been 2 support the troops rallies at the Greenville Municipal Stadium which is 30 mins. from me. SC is just full of pride! I will try to remember to take a picture of main street but I want promise it, I'm kind of forgettful.:o

I've been out of work all week, due to my son and i being really sick. But driving in to work today, on our main street (this is in the city) ALL the Lightposts (spaced only about 100ft or less apart) they all have Flags on them!!! This was really great to see! I also know our local Walmart has been doing collections like mentioned here before. Our work is also doing the shoe box collections for friends and family members we all have overseas right now. I thought this was really nice to help out the families and friends of all our co-workers. Just this past weekend, at a local park, they held a Support your troops rally. I wasnt able to go, due to being sick, but would have loved to have been there. We also have this group in Tampa, called the Bayshore Flag Wavers (? not sure of the exact name). But since 9/11 they've made an effort to be out there on this road/waterway, waving all sizes of flags to the drivers passing by. They started this up again after the war started to show their support. It's good to see, and to know that communities are coming together to show our support for the troops!!!:D

I sent Sugar Free KoolAid and WYLERS Lite soft drink mixes to the troops. We found out from the Desert Storm effort that sending the sugaradded mixes took up more space and weight than than the sugar free. So you can treat more water for the bulk. It turns out they need a break from all the forced, plain, treated, water consumption. They say it tends to encourage them to drink more water. Which I'm sure is extremely important there in the desert.
The KoolAid brand actually packs the sugar free envelopes in a flat box (pack) as well. Tends to protect from tears in the envelopes when carrying on the battlefield. I guess I should point out that the other bulk packages of powder mixes would be fine for non-battlefield (footsoldiers) where weight carried on one's person is less important. I've just been focusing on my two buds over there. One is walking one is driving, but both are limited to what they can carry and where they can sleep right now. I keep having these visions of a big barricade out side of Bagdad and the C.O. contemplating its solution and after taking a big swig of his tasty battle brew he yells "HEY KOOLAID!" then instantly on the other side I see a great explosion and through the dust comes a charging KoolAid Man dressed in Old Glory patched Desert Fatigues leading 5 thousand Marines screaming a gritty OH YEAHHHHHH! What ever works I guess. Hmmm...Freedom Punch...Hmmm...
