what to carry

I was looking at a suggested list in my guidebook. If I carry around everything that is suggested I will be one Grumpy (!) dwarf, I mean mommy.

What all do you feel are essentials?

Thanks.
I just mowed the grass and had two whole hours without interruptions to think about our trip!

Are you going with small kids and taking/renting a stroller? If so I highly recommend a small backpack. It can fit in the basket or one arm over the handle of the rental stroller.
This is what I usually have in mine:
1. snacks
2. empty ziplock baggies (one large & several small for snacks, wet clothes or whatever)
3. ponchos for the family and one for the stroller
4. camera & extra film and batteries
5. baby powder to freshen up when we're hot & sweaty
6. hair elastics & a comb
7. sunscreen with bug repellent & sunscreen lip balm
8. one change of clothes for DD
9. sunglasses for the whole family
10. bandaids & antiseptic wipes
11. rewetting drops for my contacts
12. moleskin precut in sizes for the family (saves the feet if you feel a blister coming on!)
13. small med. bottle with : children's & adult tylenol, ammodium AD, and Tums.
14. autograph book & pen
15. printout of PS's & confirmation #'s .
16. Medical insurance cards for the family and our Dr. Lic.
17. recent Photo of my DD (in case she gets lost)
18. address list of friends/family I want to send post cards to.
19. baby wipes & waterless hand cleaner
20. guide maps of the parks & park hours
21. Our itinerary
In addition to the backback we also carry a large (2 qt) insulated water jug with a flip top spout to drink from. It has a large enough opening to fill with ice and stays cold all day.

I admit it is a lot of stuff to have to lug around but it fits fine in our small pack. I would hate to be stuck without those things. If we were travelling without our DD I would definatley take a lot less! I've found that with kids it is best to have it on hand than try to find something when you have to have it NOW!

This is what was in my stroller:

Camera Bag
  • Video Camera
  • Two extra batteries
  • 4 hours of tape (Never use that much but if I wanted to...)
  • Digital Camera
  • Two extra memory cards
  • one extra set of batteries

Backpack
  • One poncho per family member + stroller
  • Tickets & Food Certificates
  • Helpful Tips as printed from internet
  • Light jacket for each child
  • Flip-flops for each child
  • Walkie-talkies
  • Surprises for kids during night activities - glow-in-the dark items/mini-flashlights
  • Small pair of childs scissors with rounded tips - to cut straws for baby's drinks, open things, whatever
  • Powder
  • Baby wipes
  • Change of clothes for baby
  • 4-5 diapers
  • sippy-cup

Insulated bag
  • Half dozen or so water bottles
  • 2 apples per family member
  • fruit snacks
  • two bottles for naptime

Now mind you, we aren't the type to take the typical breaks during the day. We try to get the most out of each and every minute so you may not need as much as we bring. Between parks, I try to unload as much as I can that I will not need - just to lighten the load a little

If you are traveling with small children, or if your plans are to get back to the resort for a break I reccomend carrying as least "stuff" as possible.
Just my opinion.
