New Camera

It's been a few months since we had a camera thread going so I thought I would start a new once since I'm looking for a new camera. Here's what I'm looking for (not sure it's ALL possible in one camera!)

1) Viewfinder (not JUST the LCD screen) I have a hard time seeing the LCD in bright sunlight and want to have an option.

2) Slim/Compact. I presently have two Kodaks that are quite bulky and take up a lot of room in my fanny pack. I would love to have something that I can put in my pocket or a pouch in my purse that I can carry all the time and doesn't take up too much room.

3) Good Zoom. I presently have a Kodak with 12x optical zoom. I realize I won't get this in a slim/compact type camera, but want something pretty decent.

4) Prefer an SD card since I have a gazillion of them already, but not 100% necessary.

What I have found is the Sony W120 Cybershot and the Canon SD1100. At first I was leaning toward the Canon since DSis has one and she took gorgeous night time and fireworks shots with it at WDW a couple weeks ago. The guy at Best Buy said that Sony's take "excellent" night and fireworks shots ("better then any other" he says).

Do any of you have a Sony? I've done some reviews and sounds like a good little camera. The price of the Sony and a new 4GB memory card for it is the same price as the Canon (I wouldn't need to buy a new memory card for the Canon as it takes SD cards)

Thanks for your help!!!

Re: New Camera

I'm not sure if this is national or not, but I went to Best Buy with the intent of purchasing the Cannon SD1100 and the sales guy, Thomas, told me to wait because they are getting like 20 new models on the 15th. He said they had a big meeting about it this weekend to learn about the new ones.

Re: New Camera

whatever you get, ask about battery life. I just got a new camera-a Canon ( i think...) Anyway-after about a half day at WDW- I needed new batteries. This went on everyday... I did take a total of 1000 pictures on our week long vacation however...

It ate batteries like candy.

Re: New Camera

I have the Canon SD870 IS. It features a 3" screen and takes EXCELLENT pictures. I haven't really used it on night/firework mode but at least with the 'IS' feature, it doesn't blurr very easily.

Nothing compares on a zoom to an SLR camera. I have always had the SLR's and it was hard to start using a Point & Shoot but with the editing options that are available via software, it's really not a big issue.

Our Best Buy people here are Canon lovers. My DD's friend has a Sony Cypershot and it takes really good pictures too. The only thing I would hesitate about a Sony is that their memory sticks are more expensive than an SD card. Just my opinion.

I have the IS feature on my Canon, too! I also think the battery life is much better with this rechargable battery, than it was on my last Canon with regular batteries (A series).

Re: New Camera

No viewfinder, but we just bought the new Nikon Coolpix.

1. 10 MP
2. SD compatable
3. 5x Optical zoom (aditional 5x digital zoom)
4. Face detection
5. Ultra Slim
6. Rechargeable battery (200 shots per charge)

Buy the Nikon Coolpix S550 10-Megapixel Digital Camera - Black and other Digital point-and-shoot cameras at circuitcity.com

I was looking for most of the features you were. It takes wonderful shots in all light settings.

Re: New Camera

I have a Sony Cybershot, about 4 years old now. Takes great pictures and I also, don't know how to use all the features. I just haven't spent the time since I seem to get great pictures most of the time. I do love the battery! Plug in to recharge, no individual batteries to change and it will take 220V so you don't have to carry an adaptor if you go out of the country. We're just back from Cuba and I used it the whole week, only running out of charge on the last day. Less than 2 hours plugged in at the piano bar (we'd already checked out) gave me 110 minutes estimated battery life for the trip home, and not even close to a full charge.

As to memory, it uses the memory stick but now that you can get the adaptors you're not stuck to Sony brand, that made a big difference to the price.

I'm thinking about a new one and will look at the Sony's again, prices have dropped so much from when I purchased this one.

Take a look at Tech product reviews for cell phones, computers, MP3 players - CNET, they have really good reviews.
