Disney Future
I just remembered something my DW and I discussed last year while riding the monorail.
We questioned whether WDW will still be as great when our kids take their kids? For us that will be about 25 to 30 years from now. So here's my question. Do you think WDW will be better or worse in 25 years? The first time I went to WDW was 27 years ago. Needless to say it got better for me with age. |

I think it will be better. The reason is it is inevitable that the economy will eventually boom again and I think that when that happens Disney will do lots of things. Also, can't even imagine what the technology will be in 25 years WOW!!! :wow:

My vote is for better. I can remember the 1st time I walked into Disney as a small child in 1978!! In some ways it has changed so much, but somethings have stayed the same, and they are the charm of WDW.

I can't see how it would not get better. Just look at Disney 25 years ago or Disneyland nearly 50 years ago. It was great at the time and so much better now. The in betweens may have ups and downs , but if you look at the moment for every ten years prior the result is major expansions, technological developments, and many new parks and resorts. 25 years from now WDW will really be impressive, even if there are no more expansions, the replacements, updates, and improvements will be awesome.

Hmmmm... I'm undecided. WDW has been wrapped up into the entire Disney conglomerate. Big conglomerates tend to be very safe and conservative...afraid to take risks and always willing to shave a buck here and there. That's not the philosophy that got Walt and Co. where they are today.

Hmmmm... I hope it only gets better with time... My first visit was in January 1973 and it wasn't near what it is today. I thought it was WONDERFUL then even if the Peter Pan ride was still being built.
I don't think Disney will ever let things rundown...they are constantly refurbishing (sometimes to my disappointment) and I don't think I have ever seen anything rusted, dirty or worn in the entire park. I hope they continue to build/expand/imagineer but even if things remained as they are, I don't think I would ever be disappointed.:D |

If they keep Walt's vision ahead of them, things can only get better. But if Eisner & crew get too business oriented & worry about the bottom line out of proportion to the magic involved, then we could be in trouble. Guess that's why it's the unknown future, huh?

As long as they keep the original vision of Walt Disney first and foremost it will always get better. However Bruce's post does give one pause! Ah but then again the glass is always half full for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

You guys have pretty much echoed our conversation. We hope for the best, and dream of our grandchildren sharing in the magic.
But I also fear that the vision will be lost. I'm afraid that the new directors in the future will see WDW as a cash cow. Afterall, a business' main goal is to make money. But this wasn't Walt's goal. I hear a lot about how Micheal Isner has not followed Walt's dream, but I don't agree. When he took helm in the early 1980's he revitalized the vision. He put forth two new parks and continued to grow the fourth. He expanded the resorts to what we have today. I believe the replacement CEO has this same philosiphy and we should be in great shape. Walt left the imagineers a road map of his dreams. Sure...WDW would be different if Walt would have lived another 25 years but I think they have done a terrific job so far. |

I just want to add these comments:
Once upon a Toy Store Mission: Space Philharmagic Pop Century Animal Kingdom Lodge Sarassota Springs Resort Expedition Everest Magic Carpets of Aladdin :D The magic still exists in the parks regardless of corporate going-ons. I agree if that is ever lost, then Disney is lost, but it will be a while before this happens... much longer than 25 years. These items above are all recent or upcoming additions and I think several of them contain that Disney Magic we have grown to love. Remember.... "There's a great big beautiful tomorrow..." Think about a beautiful well kept car... when New it is shiny and near flawless, but as time goes on, if it is maintained it will continue to look new from a distance, but if you get up close I'm sure you will find little dings or scratches... does that make it any less of a car, no. The internet allows us Disney fans to look up close to Disney, but when you look at the whole picture, it's still a nice, shiny, well kept car.

Jeff,
I agree about Eisner... to a point. He was definitely the right person at the right time. The company definitely needed leadership and revitalization. In recent years, however, his acquisition strategy has made the company too big (all IMO of course!) and maybe the problem is that he has been spread too thin. Some of his delegates on the park and movie side haven't been tooo impressive. I agree - I love what I've heard about the new guy (Rusalo?), but he hasn't had a chance to do much yet. WDWfan, Other than the resorts (and maybe the Magic Carpets) the other things all have corporate sponsors. Would we be seeing these without that sponsorship? I doubt it - too risky. Compare that to Carousel of Progress which Disney has said can't remain open without a sponsor. Even though I'm not a big CoP fan and I understand the problems with trying to keep it running all year, it's a case of deciding between $$$ and Magic. I hope no one gets me wrong here... I've literally banked on WDW's future by buying into DVC. But I'm a pessimist by nature... :nervous Bruce
