Its such a chessy little tourist trap but I really like stopping at South of the Border. Its a nice break and besides... the signs just suck you in and you just have to check it out.

We do the drive too, but never stop anywhere of interest. But we drive straight through and just want to "GET THERE"!

When we used to drive, we'd go straight through . . . 2 bathroom breaks, drive through food stops and that's all, we'd get from NJ to WDW in less then 18 hours . . . then we'd crash for a day . . . get up and start our vacation! Or course we were all under 20 at the time! ![]() |

Definitely South of the Border if you have kids. Cheezy
Wow! But the kids will like it. (Watch out for the Adult only stuff) And they have bathrooms. They have billboards up (both north and south sides) for about 100 miles beforehand, so we used to give the kid who spotted the first billboard a quarter (don't forget, we're old so it was worth more! ), and the kid who spotted their sombrero tower first also got a quarter. Reading the billboards kept them occupied for...oh...seconds at a time! Other than that, we did rest areas, motels with pools, outlet malls, and any MickeyD's with a play place. We stopped about every two hours to run the kids & make them potty.

South of the Boarder.....that's funny. It's a creepy tourist trap that's a waste of time. I went to college about 15 minutes from there so trust me. It's nothing to get all excited about. The billboards are fun though.

Re: Any must do's or stops along the I-95 from NJ to FL?
If you wish to stop for the night, try to make it to Santee, SC. Many nice hotels at that exit. Stop in at the FL welcome center for fresh free OJ.
Also, check out the I-95 info guide on the internet. The I-95 Exit Information Guide OnLine - Everything for the I-95 traveler! (or google I-95 info guide). Restaurants/food choices, gasoline, hotels, rest areas every exit by state. It also lists construction areas too. Note that I-4 does not have good places to eat, so if you get hungry, eat before turning onto I-4. I usually circle counterclock wise around Wash DC, but go straight thru Balitmore and straight thru Richmond without taking the loops. I have found that Fredericksburg VA is a nice place to stop for coffee. Enjoy the trip. |

Heh, South of the Border. When I was stationed at Camp Lejeune, we stopped there once for some fireworks. Definitely a tourist trap that looks MUCH better from the road as you drive past. There are plenty of places to see on the trip, but, if you are pressed for time, there are no must do places to see.

I would skip South of the Border if I were you. You will be so tired of seeing the signs by the time you get there, you will just be relieved to see that big sombrero in your rear view!!
If you are up for some outlet shopping, there is a great outlet mall right off 95 in Smithfield,NC. There is even a Cracker Barrel there too!!

Re: Any must do's or stops along the I-95 from NJ to FL?
I just picked up a book at Boarders called drive I-95 and the book is awesome! It lists exit by exit what resturants are there, cool things to see, where state troopers clock speeders, the price of gas, alternate routes and sooooo much more. Worth every penny. I think it cost about $20.00.

Re: Any must do's or stops along the I-95 from NJ to FL?
Ha... my boyfriend was telling me (actually, my sister) that when he was little, they drove from NJ to FL, and he they stopped at three Cracker Barrels along the way... and he got Chicken N' Dumplings every time.... on the way down and back.
I can ask him if there's anything.... he said it was a 22-hr drive and took them two days.

Re: Any must do's or stops along the I-95 from NJ to FL?
We've only done this drive twice and only because we were moving from Fla to NJ. I agree with DayDreamer, South of the Border is DEFINATELY a great roadside stop. It's like bizarro-world & reminds me of something from PeeWee's Great Adventure, or whatever that movie was from. If you are interested in the strange roadside attractions of the world... stop there. Definately something our "Weird NJ" magazine here would cover.
Otherwise, we just stopped at whatever looked interesting. Unfortunately I don't remember much besides trees, black asphalt, and occassion rest stops.

Re: Any must do's or stops along the I-95 from NJ to FL?
whe we were younger, my parents would drive us to disney from north jersey. we would leave early in the morning, and get to south of the border just after dinner time. we would stop for the taco's - not too bad, and then stay down the road a little bit at a best western. the next day we would drive through to daytona for the night (another interesting place to visit) and then drive on into disney on the third morning.

I am so glad you posted this question! Since we are planning on driving next trip, this would have been the same question I would have asked too!
To stay on topic though, how about a stop at the WDW Outlet Store before you get to Disney ~ or on the trip back!!! Disney's Character Premiere (904) 829-0359 500 Belz Outlet Road St. Augustine, FL 32095

There are many awesome things to do along that route. We're from Philadelphia, so ofcourse we go pretty much the same way! South of the Border is a neat little place to stop along the way. Also, the Crackle Barrell in Savanagh, GA is a delicious place to grab an early morning, or whenever, breakfast down on the way! Also, on the way back we alwayyyyys stop at the Maryland House (a rest stop) with awesome and one of the largest places to get food. They have nice bathrooms (most of the time! :P) And delicious restaurants or places to get quick snacks or pretty much anything else you'd need! Also, wafflehouses are yummy! Thats pretty much the all that I know that are fun or useful! I hope that helps!
