Icon11 STILL sewing costumes for MNSSHP

I have been really busy with working lots as well as sewing our costumes for the party. I think I need an extra 2 weeeks!! I finished my dress for the wicked Queen from Snow White. It really looks good (I think). But the cape is giving me a harder time than I would have thought & also DS's costumes is too small after I have cut all the material! Go figure. I have now hired someone else to make the "boots" for DS's & DBF's costumes. Also the hat for DBF (he is being grumpy). Anyway, just needed to talk about this to get rid of the stress.

This thread is useless without pictures I wish I could sew a straight line. So you're doing better than me. I'm in the process of learning how to sew though.

I wanted to post a picture but i don't know how to "shrink" the file size of the picture. Or can someone coach me on how to post a picture another way. I am what my brother calls a "computer idiot". SORRY!

If you can upload the picture to a photo website, you can link to it directly instead of using the MB photo upload.

Re: STILL sewing costumes for MNSSHP

Sorry about the delay in posting pics. My mother says I'm too picky but with time coming down to the wire, I may have to just accept that the costumes don't turn out exactly like I had envisioned. Here's an update as to where things stand: Last night I was up until 12:30 again...
-"Took in" Patrick's pants that were too big; (which was a huge deal since I had to take off the side pockets first.)
- Added patches to arms of shirt to make it look like Grumpy's shirt.
- Sewed on the collar of my "wicked Queen" cape, but now need to figure out how much material to add the red lining. (I originally had a pattern but have altered it so much that I can't use it as a guide.)
-I have enlarged (as much as possible) the exsisting "redcoat" that I made for DBF, but still have to: put the sleeves back on again, do fancy button-holes with that white braiding aroung them, finish hems, & add "cuffs" to the sleeves.
-Haven't even started DBF's pants yet!!
-Stiil also working on my crown

Re: STILL sewing costumes for MNSSHP

Oh My It all sounds wonderful.

I was certain I would be laughed off the island (so to speak) if I even suggested costumes... and now 8 days before the trip, I find my gang is thinking about costumes

The boys - the blues brothers - should be easy to pull off, just gotta buy another hat and find skinny ties.

In-Laws will both be in scooters so they thought - Nascar or Cars Theme - could get away with flags, t-shirts and hats.

But DH & I I wanna be Tink, any fairy dust out there to make me Tink? And a little more to stop time long enough that I can pull this off

Chottsy, I was about to post that link. I didn't know people actually looked at that photo and rembered it! Gawrsh...

Whitba: to explain the costume, I found my inspiration from a drawing by a friend, her version of a punky, fun Tinkerbell. She was impressed by how closely I stuck to the drawing. Take notes!!

- I found the green haltertop at Goodwill (I got to goodwill for half of my costume needs!) At this point, I think any green tanktop would work just fine.

- I already owned a pair of suitable sneakers, but they were very old and dirty so I simply painted them green. I gave them new white laces, and then glued white pom poms to each lace ending.

- I couldn't find green knee-high socks (green is not the new pink right now) so two days before costume time, I found a silvery lime green sweater at Goodwill, and cut off the arms, and turned them into legwarmers! I was fortunate to have the end of the sweaters wide enough to pull up around my calves, but tight enough to stay on. If you use this method instead of socks, or if you like this look at all, be ready to do some cutting and/or use some ribbon to keep them up. No garters!

- The wings cost me 20 bucks at a costume shop. I'm not even going to try explaining my bs'd process for tying them on in such a way that they stayed straight and rigid, and the ribbons stayed as hidden as possible, so I wish you luck in that regard. I know you're not a starving student, but feel free to save money by making your own, old school style (coat hangers, tights...)

- I cut off all my hair two months prior, so I just threw a green hairclip in there. Screw wigs, they're like fifty bucks.

- Bear with me here, I don't have the skirt with me and I'm trying to remember. I was SO FORTUNATE to find a big pile of sparkly, stretcy, lightweight fabric at a flea market (its versatile enough to make a mermaid fin someday!) for about a dollar, and some leftover green tulle at Joann's. I used these for the skirt. I made my own pattern by taping newspaper together, and cutting out an alternating rounded zig zag. (Think leafy) I cut the fabric according to the pattern, only TWICE, the second time with a greater length. (I wasn't comfortable showing so much leg.) I did the exact same thing for the tulle, but tried to make it more arbitrary. I layered them, inside to out: long sparkly, long tulle, shorter sparkly, shorter tulle, with the 'leaves' alternating as much as possible, folded over the top for a BIG hem, then sewed the hem, and sewed the back. And after cutting a skirt slip in another zig zag pattern...Voila!

- the hem was so big (and the finished skirt more than twice my width!!) so I could string a green ribbon through and simply drawstring the whole sucker. This made the skirt more bunchy and natural, made my sewing job alot faster, and made my skirt wearable even after my high metabolism wears out. You better believe I am going to recycle this costume!

Here's another picture of the finished product, if it helps.

Professional seamstresses would gawk at my horrible sewing job, but I wasn't out to impress anybody, and it got the job done in about 48 hours. As you can see, I really bs'd the whole process but it worked out in the end and I'm still way proud of myself. Sometimes the coolest costumes don't need to cost us 80 dollars!

Best of luck finding everything you need to be Tinkerbell! With 8 days, I know you can do it!!!

Sorry for jacking the thread!! Nancy, you need to post pictures pronto!!
