I think we feel subliminally comforted by the 'familiar,' so often pieces in pop culture will be re-replicated in small ways to convince us that we can already 'relate' or feel comfortable with that image because we've seen it before.

Think about it this way, if EACH time you visited WDW or DL the Peter Pan ride was COMPLETELY different inside would you have such an emotional/fuzzy attachment to it? Probably not. Those 'templates' are just subliminal 'reminders' that suggest, "you've seen this before, it's nostalgic, & it makes you have a warm & fuzzy attachment to it."
Wish, just curious but by any chance would you be a psych major????

Not cheap, it's totally a technique & Walt was the INVENTOR of this technique in the Disney company, why do you think he used Main St., USA as an entry way into his original park? Familiar, relatable, & the attachment TOTALLY keeps us all coming back for more.

Re: Disney Templates

On the other hand, another theory that could perhaps work with mine as well, would be that mayyyyybe during the times that the replications happened were times when the studios weren't doing so well? Maybe there were labour disputes, or financial troubles with the animators & instead of creating 100% original films with EVERY single frame being brand new they just slapped a few re-painted characters onto the cells before throwing them in that Llamda machine thing?

I don't know the mechanics of vintage animation but I know a lot of the ladies in the "ink & paint" department were cheaper labor than highly skilled animators. Maybe they were instructed to just change the outlines & then they'd use the same animation movement?

Anyway, two theories from me.

Well... The Jungle Book was released in 1967 and Robin Hood in 1973, so both were in the works during the construction of "The Florida Project," which would definitely be eating up a great deal of the company's funds.

Re: Disney Templates

I don't have any theories myself, but I will say this... I am not suprised about these templates, I also do not feel duped, but I think this is common practice for Disney. Look at the different rides within the parks. They are very similar, for instance, The Haunted Mansion, and Nemo and Friends. Same sort of ride, different theming. I guess if it works, just recreate it in a different way! Also, the 3-D movie thing, from the old one with Michael Jackson (Captain EO~ I think that was the name, I also think I could be wrong) to the Honey I shrunk the Kids, to Muppets, Ariel and even Mickey's Philharmagic. They are all the same type of "ride" just recreated!

Re: Disney Templates

I googled this and was trying to see if there was an answer posted about this. I found this site that shows the stills side by side: Disney Animation Reuse

Even though the positions and postures are the same, the coloration is VERY different. The hours it takes to paint just ONE CELL is endless. So I'm not surprised they would reuse certain things.

I took an animation class in college. We did ONE 15 sec short, and it took a WHOLE semester . . . 15 seconds!! So imagine the time and energy that goes into and 1.5 long movie.

I have a friend from college who was an animator on BOLT, you can see his name in the credits under mittens. He said that computers don't speed up the process, it's still a long one . . . the computers just enhance the experience.

I was more referring to the use of that exact Bambi cell over and over. The "Disney template" thing doesn't bother me much at all. At least they drew someting new, even if actions were the same, yknow? I see what you're saying about comfort in familiarity with the rides and such, but personally I think its a whole nother ballgame when it comes to films. =)

This doesn't take a Rocket Scientist to explain ... This is no different than what is being done in music !!!! We never really recognize it because it becomes the norm. When we hear a certain song and think that it sounds like another song .. it's because it is played with the same tone or note .

Amen. John Williams does it all the time. (But some would call him a hack. )

Re: Disney Templates

Danny Elfman is another, (Spiderman/Nightmare Before Christmas),
Hans Zimmer ..... If you listen to all 3 Pirates cd's , then pop in the Batman Begins or The Dark Knight cd's they all contain the same music .... Notes/Tones, it's just not visual

Oooooh I thought you meant musicians who stole from other musicians. Yeah, there are alot of composers out there who just have this trademark sound. Though I will say I was surprised to see (and hear) that Danny Elfman did the music for Black Beauty (the 90s one). It was gorgeous...

Re: Disney Templates

I remember when "Batman" with M.Keaton came out and sitting in the theater , the opening score was amazing and I never knew that was Elfman until it popped up on the screen.... Many years later when "Spiderman" came out there was that same sound and I immediatly recognized it. I guess musiscians call it their "Signature" sound .... Why can't the artist who do animation?

Re: Disney Templates

Well if anyone has watched the modern marvels episode on Disney world you will see that they created a machine for movies that gave each scene depth and could use these as fillers so you didn't have 3000 extra pages to have to capture in stop
motion. Back in these movies day they where reviered as technologies finest, but in to days life people look at this and think "I've been jipped!!! What a scam!!" and so on because they are so used to seeing new digitally made stuff which Is stupid because they are still movies that have stood the test of time! These are amazing stories and great films and I'm so sick of politicly correctness I could just explode! All things said these templates where made as shortcuts in animation and every single job has shortcuts. If you only knew what it took to design, code, and program software people wouldreally respect the next installment of word 2009 or Photoshop cs5
