Extra Luggage Question

Does anyone do this? I was thinking about packing a medium sized piece of luggage with snacks and juice boxes...maybe diapers. This way for our departure day we will have that luggage for the items we purchased in WDW.

Each person is allowed two pieces of luggage, right??

On the airlines, right? We have never been questions about the luggage limit, unless travelling over seas. I think they are more concerned with weight than with the actual numbers. If it ended up that one person had three and the others had two to check in, you would be fine. If you were to each show up with 4 bags, you might run into a problem.

By the way, why do you think you will be going to Disney with more than two bags each?

We did this last time and it worked out really well. We packed an extra bag with snacks, and other stuff that was not coming home with us and then used it to bring home souveniers. A lot cheaper than shipping it!

I do believe you are allowed 3 check-in bags per passenger. We called once and asked them if it was OK to check 1 more than the maximum and they told us it would cost $75. So I would call the airlines to make sure what their rules are.

I thought the airlines limited you to two bags per purchased ticket. We purchased four seats, but did not purchase one for the baby. Last time they "counted" each car seat as a piece of luggage. So, I was figuring one bag per person, two car seats and two strollers. I was thinking that was 7 bags, so I would pack one full of snacks and diapers, to make 8 bags. Am I making sense or am I confused??

Flying Delta if that matters.

Delta will limit you to two checked items per ticket, one carry on per person and one personal item*. I think if you have one extra item, they may charge you $40, but I have never been charged that fee.

* Personal items:
a male or female purse
a briefcase
a laptop/computer
a camera case
a diaper bag
an item of a similar size or smaller size to those listed above

I was probably wrong on the 3 bag thing. Sorry. :o

I can't remember which airline we were flying that told us about the $75, but they seemed pretty serious about enforcing it, so I would still call and ask or as Scar would say, "Be Prepared."

Thanks Mickey and mmouse671! I think I will have it covered so that I do not run into any added airline expenses. That would bumm me out.

As for my orginal question....I will pack that "extra" luggage with snacks and diapers. A VERY BIG one! I intend to load it up with Disney stuff for the return trip!!!:)

Also remember, the airlines now charge you if the bags are over a certain weight! :dazed They haven't been that strict with that here, in New York at JFK or LGA, but they are strict in other places! My DH had a problem on his way back from Vegas, and he had to pay $$ since he was over the weight limit! He flew American...I think...:dazed

If you're flying American Airlines, their website is very helpful with luggage questions.

We flew American last month and were allowed 2 checked bags each (wt limit of 50 lbs ea), 1 carry-on (wt limit 40 lbs) and 1 personal item.

I believe the AA website says not to put food items in checked baggage and you definitely don't want to put film in checked luggage!

I'm so picky about my film I requested that it be hand checked both ways. The inspectors at the airport we flew out of kept saying I didn't need to have it hand checked if it was less than 800 speed but they did it for me anyway. The folks at the Orlando airport (MCO) just said ok and passed it on to the person doing that job - and the Orlando airport was WAY busier than the one we flew out of.

I agree about the film--I am *extremely* picky about my film, as is my father (who is a photographer.) We always ask to have our film hand-checked, because despite the airlines' insistence that there will be "no effect" from the x-ray, I've seen otherwise. Even when we just bring 200 or 400 speed film for vacation snapshots, we still play it safe and have it handchecked!

I believe the standard on most airlines is 2 checked items, 1 carry-on and 1 personal item.

My personal suggestion: DEFINITELY bring at least an extra folded up duffel bag or soft-sided suitcase so you can tote home extra Disney souvenirs!! (I didn't do this last time and greatly regretted it. I was seen lugging plastic WDW bags stuffed to the brim. And since I couldn't bring them all on the plane, I had to check some of them and risk injury to my beautiful souvenirs!) This works great if you bring food along, and stuff souvenirs in the empty food suitcase upon your depature. :)
