Question about putting Digital Pictures on a CD

Another thread got me thinking about saving my pictures that I download online, onto a CD. I have looked up the info on Sutterfly.com,and it seems pretty reasonable to me. But my questions is, can't I do this from home myself? I have a Kodak Digital Camera, and I just went to the Kodak software and it has a selection to burn a CD.

I'm always worried that I could mess somthing up. But i just tried to copy it to my last CD-RW that i had, and the 10 pictures i picked are on there. It also said i had a lot of space left over.

I guess my question is, is it smart/safe to do the copying to a CD myself? Would it be the same thing as ordering it from an online company? will what i do last?

Also, will it work only on a CD-RW or will it also work on a CD-R? (I think the difference is RW you can rewrite on, so I may not want to use that??? not quite sure)

Thanks for any help!!! I want to be able to protect and save all my disney (and other) pictures!!!

I use CD-R disks, they are much less expensive than CD-RW disks, and once the pictures are burned onto a CD, I want to keep them permanently anyways.

Your computer's CD burner should have come with software to burn CDs. I transfer all my pictures onto my hard drive, each trip being in a separate folder. Then I copy the folders with the pictures onto the CD (copy as Data) using my CD burner's software. A CD will hold between 600-750MB of pictures. That's quite a few pictures!

Jmouse, I also have a CD burner built into my computer, and I have never used it. I don't know if I have any separate software...is it possible that it is downloaded onto my computer? I bought my computer from Dell and they installed everything onto my computer before I received it...any thoughts? Also, how hard or easy is it to use? I am sure I can figure it out, but I haven't tried yet!!! And definitely want to!!! :dazed

iluvwdw, its very likely you have a bundled version of Easy CD. If you have a CD burner then you have software on your PC to burn disk.
there are all sorts of things you can do with pictures then just burn them on to a CD .. you can even make VCD's with your pictures that include audio, like i have one WDW VCD of pictures with "its a great big beautiful tomorrow" and other disney songs playing along with the pictures .. I can put this in my DVD player in the living room and we can watch on DH's big screen tv :) life size almost !!!
check to see if you have Roxie Easy CD Creator .. its a very simple program to use, specially to make photo CD's

Tink, Yes, I do have ROXIO EASY CD CREATOR 5! I never knew how to use this, so I never even attempted! I would love to do some of the things you just said! Is there an instruction manual for making the VCD's (does this stand for VIDEO CD?). I love the idea of Disney music on the CD when I put my Disney pictures on the disc!!! And where do you download the music??? :dazed Obviously, I don't take full advantage of what my computer can do!!! :dazed  :dazed

I want to do the same thing too!! How the heck did you find out the name of the CD burner you have? Mine came "packaged" into my computer. I"ve always wondered how you did that tink!! Teach this computer illiterate person how to do this!! What kind of CD's do you need to use??? :dazed :D :)

ALso thanks jmouse for the adivse on putting my pictures on the CD's!! I had a lot of CD-R's for recording my music cds onto. So i got to playing around last night and put all of my june pictures on there, with TONS of room to spare!! Now onto putting the baseball, soccer, easter, other disney trips, playtime, school pictures...etc onto a cd!!

Do you fill up the cd's w/a whole bunch of pictures, or just put ceratin pictures on there. LIke all disney pictures on one, all baseball on antoher? I think that's what I'm going to do.

Anyways, thanks again!! You learn something new everyday!!!

iluvwdw ok great you have the latest version of Easy CD
and it will walk you through making a video CD (yes thats what VCD stands for )
you need CD-R's but make sure they are the type for computers and not merely audio recording .. you can test with a CD-RW that way if ya goof you can erase and start over ..also you can use it as an idea of how you want the final to come out. you can use Midi files, mpg even audio off a music CD.
to start open Project Selector
and select it from there .. there is a button for photo or VCD. the most important thing to remember is before recording to the blank disk make sure you check the box that say's Disc At Once. you will find this if you check options on the box that says Start Recording if you dont set the Disc-at-once it wont burn properly

goofygal1975 go to start / programs and it should be listed in your program menu. If you dont find it that way .. go to start - search -files or folder and type in roxie or cd burner

the versions are different a bundled version may not have all the extra's but there are tons of free VCD programs out there and a good place to look is
www.simtel.com .. Kodak I believe has a free program for creating picture CD's
also check Download.com for free VCD or picture CD programs.

you can also do a search for disney midi files
at any search engine to add your music
anything I forgot to answer ..let me know :)
Dixie and I share VCD's of everything
and since she has learned how to make them every time she turns around someone is coming to her and asking her to make one for someones birthday / anniversary or something :)

OH yeah it is fun and easy to save your pics. A single CD will hold quite a few photos. I save all mine onto CDs:)

me too Matto, but my biggest fault is not putting labels on them .. soooo yep you guessed it I have to search through hundreds.

and one really great thing about most DVD players is that they do also play picture CD's .. its such fun to annoy your guest (specially on a big screen tv ) with all you pictures

I was thinking that the difference in CDRs and CDRWs is that once you burn something onto a CDR, that is it. There is no way to add to that CD. If you had a bunch of room left, it was my understanding that you lost that space on the disc.

Have I been misled? I have a burner at work but not at home so I could do this if I could bring my camera and connector to work. Just want to make sure I know what CDs are best.

with Roxie Easy CD you can leave a disk open until its full by using Direct CD. with the Direct CD program you can even drop and drag files on to the CD, when its full you can then select to have it closed to be read on any CD drive. you can never remove a file though on a CD-R once it is there.
CDRWs are eraseable and re-useable, you can even delete one or more files off of a CD-RW if you are using Direct CD program that comes with Easy CD.
But some CD-R's are for Audio and say so.

Wow, this is some really great info, Tink! Thanks so much. I am going to try this when I get back from my next trip to WDW!!! That should be fun!!!

Heather, I did exactly what Tink said to do, to find what program I had...I hit the start button and saw it listed on there as one of the programs. My program was pre installed from the manufacturer (Dell), and I never touched it this past year and a half!!! :dazed

If you are looking at getting a new computer go to any Apple store and ask for a tour of iPhoto.

iPhoto has to be the easiest digital photo management system out there (CD's, Prints, Web pages, Books, slide shows, etc it does just about everything). It also integrates into iTunes (music) and iMovie (video) so making or using photos in custom videos is a snap.

Sorry for the commercial...I just like to share :D
