WARNING!! Ebay account update

I know that a few of you out there sell/buy stuff on ebay and I thought that I would give you all a warning.

If you receive an email from ebay asking for you to change your User ID or Password, DO NOT REPLY!!!

It looks really official and I had been getting the message daily for about a week or so so I finally followed the link and changed my password.

Well, turns out there is a scam going on where someone will obtain your information from ebay and use it to list stuff charging all the fees to your account. You will not even know that they're doing it.

I had received an email from ebay stating that they received my notification for change of User ID. It then gave a paragraph about "if you didn't authorize this change"... then to follow this link to report. Well, I did because I DIDN'T change the User ID, I changed the password.

This was yesterday. Today I received an email from ebay (yes it was from them) stating that I had been a victim of this scam that is going around and fortunately they were able to catch it because I reported that I didn't change my User ID.

There had been 30 listings totalling over $150 using my account. Ebay has credited each & every dollar back to my account, thank goodness!

I don't think of myself as a "stupid" person to fall for such stuff but the emails were VERY authentic looking. Who knows how many other people this has happened to without their knowing. Thank goodness I was smart enough to e-mail ebay when they sent me notice about changing my User ID.

Just thought I would warn everyone.

Wow, this is confusing. Ebay just asked me to update my user settings so that I did NOT use my email addy to log in. I've got nothing listed under a 'selling' column, so does this mean I'm clear? How did you find out someone was using your account? Where did it appear?

I went to ebay and sure enough got the same thing, and now I am thinking that my ebay account is also tied in somehow to my hotmail account .. I dont use the dumb hotmail one but have it for Msn messanger or something like that .. all I get there is junk mail.

I check ebay everyday & when I went to sign in I kept getting this 'pop up' thing asking me to change my Password because it read something like "you shouldn't be using your email address as your User ID" or something along those lines.

After about a week of this, I finally decided to change my password. The next day, ebay sent me an email advising that I had changed my User ID.

I guess when I got that e-mail I had a "gut" feeling that something was wrong. I didn't realize that it was MAJORLY wrong. It had indicated that I changed my User ID from such-n-such to so-n-so. We don't have MSN so I knew that something wasn't right.

Ebay stated that they NEVER send e-mails to their members requesting they change User ID or password or update credit card information and to report it to spam@eaby.

If any of you feel that this may happen to you, contact ebay IMMEDIATELY via the 'help' option or customer support/questions.

Tink and I have a mutual friend called Jo who also had a similar e-mail, except hers said her EBay account had been suspended due to some violation of their rules, as Jo was quite new to EBay she forwarded the mail to me and I have to say it was an absolute carbon copy of EBays pages, it even quoted the section of the rules that Jo had supposedly violated, it asked her to re register with a new ID a new password and update her credit card info, Jo and I e-mailed EBay immediately (the 'real' Ebay that is) and they asked us to forward the 'scam' e-mail to them and they said they would try and trace it back to its origins, Jo actually heard no more from Ebay, and luckily she did not act upon the scams instructions but as I said the forgery was so good I wouldnt have been surprised if she had, I had read an article in a Computer magazine a couple of weeks earlier reporting Ebay fraud e-mails and thats the only reason I was wary other wise I think I too may have fallen for it as it was so very professional, I still have a copy of the 'fake' e-mail on my computer and it even has a link direct for Jo to change her EBay details, very scary!

Re: WARNING!! Ebay account update

These ebay scams come out all the time. Ebay has stated they will NEVER send requests for account info via email. If you get one of those emails, delete it.

And as a general rule: never click on a link in an email: if you want to check on your account somewhere, copy and paste or type the url in yourself.

Re: WARNING!! Ebay account update

There's also a way to check the validity of an ebay email. I think you just forward the email to spoof@ebay.com or something similar (it's on their website faqs), they'll email you back, usually within 24 hours, telling you if it's real or a scam.

But they are very real looking.

Took the words right out of my mouth. But I was also going to say, make sure that you forward a copy of these emails to Ebay because they do investigate and take action towards these spoofers.

Re: WARNING!! Ebay account update

Unfortunately there are TONS of these SOBs out there. This is called Phishing and they are looking to steal your id and passwords...bank, internet, ebay, paypal...you name it.

They are GOOD at it. They steal logos so it LOOKS official. The trick is the link even though it SORT OF looks like ebay, paypal or whatever ISN'T. You blindly give then your account information, SSN, password and you are then ripped off.

Because my email address is on the website, I get TONS of this @#$#@%. I get emails from banks that I never heard of, and some that I have.

I won't even use the BUY IT NOW option as a seller on ebay anymore. Somebody ripped the password from another user who then "bought" something like $2 million in airplanes. We got emails that said "Hi I bought your item. Send me your bank info so I can send you the money..."

NEVER, EVER under any circumstances click on the link in an email. So what if your account is "about to be frozen" - that's better than DRAINED.

Oh...and don't forget the people who want your help in getting money out of some bad country and are willing to SPLIT it with you or the email lottery that you won. They are SCAMS too. Why last week alone, I won 4 email lottery totaling MILLIONS, and have serveral people that are willing to share about 10 more million.

WHY am I still working for a living?!?

Re: WARNING!! Ebay account update

I got that email last week. It does look very official, but I became suspicious when my ATM password was part of the questions to answer. I changed all my passwords etc on ebay.

Fine! I was simply trying to move some of my off-shore accounts, but if that's the way you're going to view my emails, I'll just get Pumouse to help me and let her keep the money.
