Hurricane Isabel, Where You Going??

To all my fellow Mid-Atlantic DC'ers please be careful the next couple days it looks like we are in for a hit from Ms. Isabel. I hope she changes her mind and decides to go way east and north away from the east coast of the US. Keep checking your local weather and stay safe.

I couldn't agree more, Paula!

Please, if you are on the east coast...better safe than sorry! Head out to the store early to stock up on batteries, candles and water. Don't wait (!!) or the things you need will be really hard to find!

We live southwest of DC (Washington, DC), I don't know how far inland will be affected, I have never been this near a hurricane before. Any words of wisdom?

It seems that everytime the wind blows here out the power goes! DH just called, he is out west on business, and said get gas for the generator, batteries and water! We bought a generator last winter because we were tired of being without basics when the power goes out. By basics I mean flush toilets as when there is no power we have no well pump!

We are supposed to be picking up our new boat on Saturday and have to have proof of insurance but I cannot get anybody to write a policy because of Isabel!

Wish I could help ya there garada3.... Being in SC, I have weathered (no pun intended) a couple of Category 3s but never a 5er. We are holding our breath as well down here. The Governor has already issued basic warnings. They seem to think it may go further North than us. Regardless... pixie dust to all in its path....

On the way home from class tonight I heard on the radio that Isabel is now a category 3 instead of 5, but that still means 125mph winds. Hmm...maybe I should take in the patio furniture?

I have to admit that Isabel did not set her sights on Florida as was being discussed whenI first heard about her. I didn't want anything to disrupt Disney World!

garada3:

We don't get many hurricane here in New Jersey I think the last one that directly came close was Gloria in 1995. Floyd flooded areas 4 years ago but it wasn't a direct hit. If your sufficiently inland you should be fine. We are about 20 miles inland from the Jersey coast. Just bring in your patio furniture and secure anything that would be easily blown away by swift winds. Watch the weather and listen to the warning and you'll be fine. It certainly was good new that it downgraded to a (3) but our weatherman thinks it may intensify again let hope not. Anyway stay safe and dry.

My brother lives down your way just outside Washington DC his medical practice is located in Washington DC. They love it there. House market is very pricey like here in Jersey but I saw some beautiful homes when we visited.

Preidel24 where in NJ are you? Iam also in NJ. We are in Brick and Im getting a little scared. I guess the only thing that we can do at this point is wait and see what happens. I still keep hoping that she will change her mind and turn out towards the ocean.

To everyone please be careful and prepared. Pixie dust sent to all of you and hope that everyone stays safe.

I will be praying for those of you in the path of Isabel.Best thing to do is be prepared and not to panic.I have been through Hurricane Hugo in Charleston SC,and Hurricane Andrew in Miami ,Florida(2 of the biggest),and I am here to tell you about it.As long as you pay attention to the news and forecasts and follow instructions all will be fine.Plus with all the prayers and good thoughts from your fellow DCers ,only good things can happen.Hang tight and think about your next trip to Disney!:)

Wedindisney,

We live about 20 miles north and east of Cherry Hill in the small township of Mansfield. It takes us about 15 miles to get to the shore house at Long Beach Island, Barnaget to be exact. Looks like it's going to miss us and pass more inland like the suburbs of Philly. I hope it changes all that flooding yesterday in PA I don't think they can handle any more rain. Stay safe you are much closer to the shore than us. By the time they usually hit us they have weakened and we just get strong wind and driving rains.

Start scrubbing those tubs! You can always pull the plug if you don't need it!

Canned food, bread, water, batteries, radio, lots of magazines to read! Candles (but be careful), use zip lock bags to store the things you treasure.

Good luck to everyone in Isabel's path, this coming from one that lives on the Texas Gulf Coast.

Hurricane Isabelle, Where You Going??

We live in Ocean City, NJ, a barrier island just south of Atlantic City. My house is about 5 blocks from the ocean and 4 blocks from the bay. Winter sorms and Nor'easters seem to cause us more problems than hurricanes, but no one wants to take any chances.

We will take everything that is not nailed down inside to prevent things from blowing away, but my big concern is the flooding that usually occurs. The house should be ok, but cars are always a big worry. We usually park on high ground, but if it looks like it will get too bad, we have relatives on the mainland who are always happy to have us pay a visit. They happen to be fellow DVC members, so we always have plenty to talk about!

For now, we just sit and wait and hope that it fizzles out or turns way out to sea.

I hope everyone stays safe and sound and gets through it with minimal problems.

Graybill....Good Luck and make sure you let us know how you make out!

I live about 10 miles from the shore, and have family that live on the water coming to stay for a few days. We're pretty sure their property is going to be underwater. I don't expect much here but wind and standing water. The ground is already saturated, so it won't take much to wash out our roads.

I'm going tomorrow to the beach to see the waves. That is the most exciting part! The beach will be deserted except for a few surfers and spectators. It really is a neat thing to see, the power of the wind and the water. Very Humbling.

Hurricane Isabelle, Where You Going??

Trish,

Thanks for the encouraging words!

From the looks of things right now, the path seems to be moving more inland and south of us, but we are still under a tropical storm watch as I would think you are in Delaware.

We just have to keep waiting and be prepared for whatever happens in the next 36 hrs. or so.

I'll keep you posted.

I know you are very close to the water in Lewes, so good luck to you and your family. Stay safe!

Graybill,

if the eye is coming in south of you, be prepared for lots of water. That will put you on the east side of the storm, and that is where most of the rain is.

Please be careful and keep your chin up.
