Finally Isabel's gone and what a night she gave us!
Ah, to finally be able to get back on to DC. Isabel hit us last night around seven with high winds and knocked our power out. The rough stuff didn't come to between 1:30am and 4am. As soon as the winds die down we have a lot of picking up to do. We lost quite a few trees and branches and leaves are everywhere. It blew two of the windows out of our screened in porch. For those of you who don't know DH and I live on an 150+ acre farm so you can see we have lots of clean-up to keep us busy. We didn't get much rain, just fierce winds that knocked over trees and knocked out our power . Hope everyone else fared well. Hard work is fine with me just as long as nobody gets hurt. So great to be back on - electricity rocks!!!

I have never been through anything like that. It must be nerve racking. I am glad that everyone is safe and that the power is back on. Hope you don't find too much damage. While you are cleaning remember our pal Jiminy and "Whilsle While You Work"

Glad to hear you are ok, these big blows can be very nerve racking. Since LRTJS mentioned WWYW, I thought I'd add "A Spoonfull Of Sugar" to your work song list.
Best regards, -harry

I'm located s/w of Phila and we also had our fair share of wind & rain. It got pretty nasty.
They closed all the schools today just in case. Other than losing power (for only about 15 minutes) and some good size trees & branches laying around the neighborhood, all went pretty well. I had unplugged all of my major electronics just to be safe. Man, I was going through withdraw. No bigscreen, computer or stereo?? I had to actually talk to the family!! (just kidding) Anyway it could have been alot worse and I really don't need any major home repairs with less than a week before our trip. Hope everybody who was in Isabels path was as lucky as us!! I love to see that countdown waaaaaaaaaahhhwhooooooo!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D Mark

I live on the coast of Delaware...and a hurricane is an amazing thing to witness at the beach. I took a trip to the beach before and after the storm, and the erosion is incredible..there is hardly any beach left at all! The waves were awesome. Hard to believe that something so beautiful can be so destructive.
My home and family are safe. We experienced alot of wind, a little rain, and only a short power outage in the middle of the night. My thoughts and prayers are with the people who didn't make out as well as we did.... Hope Graybill made out ok!

Trish,
I think we got off more easily than nearly everyone! The island was well prepared, but we had little to no flooding, minor beach erosion and I don't think the wind even reached 50 mph here. Things were much worse on the mainland from what I have heard. We have more problems when there is a high tide and heavy rain at the same time. We were very lucky! Thanks to all for your thoughts and prayers. My heart goes out to those who were not so fortunate. They still have a lot to deal with. graybill

Well I spoke to soon. As soon as I posted this message we lost our power again. Seems the problem was a down tree on our road and they had been searching for it was blowing out transformer causing us to lose our power. Anyway lots of good old fashioned family time and hard work cleaning the yard up. But now the power is on steady (they fixed the problem) and I can once again enjoy my DC!Glad to see everyone came throught okay. Has anyone heard from garada3 I heard Virginia got hit hard. Hope all is fine with her family.

Thanks for your thoughts!
What a wonderful warm feeling to see your concern for my family! Thanks DC family.
We just got power back this morning, Monday. It went out Thursday early afternoon, right after the kids got off the bus (they only had a half day because of the approaching storm). Winds and rain were really picking up by 2:00. By 10:00pm the windows were really shaking with each gust of wind and the dog had to be pushed off the porch to do her business in the pouring rain. I couldn't sleep that night so I sat up with the weather alert radio listening for tornado warnings. The power of the storm was really something around here - it must have been incredible at the shore. We lost a few trees and spent most the weekend cleaning up, DH on the chainsaw and me dragging branches and logs to the burn pile. Still lots to do. Luckily, we did not get water in the basement. I feel so sorry for all those who experienced flooding closer to the Potomac and Chesapeake Bay that I was hearing about on the radio. Thank goodness we bought a generator last winter. We had our well pump hoked up so we could flush and shower. We even invited over our not to fortunate neighbors to take advantage of the water. DH's work place still has no power. Phones were out until Sunday afternoon. It was nice to have family time with no interruptions. The kids however want through major electonic withdrawls! Thanks again for your thoughts! |

Glad to hear your family is safe. I had heard that VA got hit pretty bad and was concerned. We had one bad night and lost power for the two days mainly because of trees down on our road. My kids had withdrawl too. They wanted to go sit in the car so they could watch movies and listen to the radio. Too cute - there so addicted to electrical appliances. I missed my computer the most not being able to check in at DC and check e-mail and our course all things disney. So I did the next best thing I called disney paid off my trip and made my last PS arrangements - it was good therapy for the electrically deprived.

I also used the hours of darkness to plan for Disney. I think I re- read every word of my three guidebooks by lantern light! Bad weather can't stop us dedicated Disney planners - lol!
We got a reward for all the tree clearing that we have been doing - our travel documents and luggage tags arrived yesterday! The happy dance performed in the kitchen surpassed the "power is back on " happy dance! |
