Film and Memory Stick

I have no idea how much film to take and if I should pick up another memory card.

How many rolls of film do all of you bring on vacation?

I am trying to figure out how many photos fit on the memory stick. I think quite a few as the stick cost almost $100. It says 128MB on the outside.

I know I will be taking lots of photos but really have no idea how many. Can you share your experiences?

Thanks

I usually take at least 15 rolls of film with us for an 8 day trip. I hate to pay WDW price for film so I would rather be safe than sorry. I look at it this way, we will use any left over film when we get home so it is not a waste of money.

As far as the memory stick goes, I can't help there, that's my DH's area. Since he forgot the digital camera for our trip in July he is not a very good person to ask!

I know you can take your sticks to a couple of places at WDW and have the pictures put on a CD. I looked into it before our trip just in case we ran out of room (didn't happen!!). I think it was about $12 to do that and I think I found the info on wdwig. I will try to look that up tonight.

I took 10 rolls of film for 8 day trip. Used everyone of them. I took lots of pix. As for the memory card, Mom took two of them. Filled them both up. She also used about 3 rolls of film. I have read on another thread where people will take several smaller memory cards instead of one or two bigger ones. That way if something happens to a card not all of your WDW pix are lost. Since I don't have a digital camera, I don't know if that is a good option or not. But if, as Disney Teacher stated, you can have them transfered to a CD while you are there, that would be a good way to go. Then you would have plenty of room for taking more pix and would not have to worry about anything happening to them.

I believe that the amount of pictures depends on the resolution, ie. how many MB a single picture takes. My Dh is the computer person here and he suggests that you take some pictures at home, download them to your computer and simply check the size of the file. That would give you a good idea. I know that our Cannon can fit about 250 pictures on the 256MB memory stick. I've never tried to fit on more. Hope this helps!

We are personally taking 8 rolls of 400 speed film for the older children, 4 disposable waterproof (LOL) cameras for the 4 yo, and our digital with a 30MB and a 256MB memory card. We may be overdoing it a bit, but they are only young once and I'd hate to miss a really good shot for lack of film. I am leaving the video camera at home because my FIL is bringing his and we'll be lucky not to get filmed while eating, the way he likes to document his grandchildren's lives.

This will be my first year taking a digital camera, but I will still be bringing about 15 rolls of film as well. WDW only sells Kodak and I like to also use Fuji from time to time.

For your digital question, you need to figure out how many mega-pixel resolution your digital camera has and then divide that into your memory stick. That is assuming you want the best pictures your camera can take. Most consumer cameras are in the 2 to 3 mega-pixel range with the pro cameras hitting the 5 to 6 mega-pixel area. Most camera have built in compression, but you do loose a bit of final quality when you use it. You probably would not notice it on a 4x5 print, but if you wanted to make 8x10s you would.

So assuming you have a nice 2 megapixel camera and are shooting at best resolution without compression you would get roughly 64 pictures on that 128 meg stick.

I remember reading a while ago about a portable storage device to allow you to go back to your room each day and download your camera onto writable CDs. I don't recall what it was called or if it was in production or not. I'll have to see if I can find it in an old magazine.

Hope this helps,
-harry

I got this from wdwig, I hope it helps.

There are two locations to have your digital pictures transferred from memory cards/sticks to disk. The shop in the Kodak-sponsored Journey Into Imagination Pavilion features a full-service photographic lab. Transferring up to 120 images to a disk costs $11.99 plus tax, and $5.99 plus tax for up to 120 additional images. Prints are $.69 each. (Prices subject to change.) You may also drop off your digital media for transfer at The Darkroom on Hollywood Boulevard at Disney-MGM Studios. The cards are sent to the lab at the Imagination Pavilion for transfer, and must be in by 12:00 noon. They are returned at 5:00 pm. Transfer only takes two hours if you go directly to the lab in Imagination.

Uploading to a computer for e-mailing may be available at the business centers of the resorts featuring convention and meeting space, such as the Yacht and Beach Clubs, the Swan and Dolphin, the Grand Floridian, Coronado Springs, or the Contemporary. Call the resorts' business centers before making the trek to make sure they have computers available for Guest use. You will need to bring your own card reader. There will be a per-hour charge for use of these computers, which can be expensive.

The storage device GrumpyDad's referring to is called a Digital Wallet. A friend of mine bought one when they first came out for quite a bit of money. I bring our laptop and download to that nightly.

I bring about 10 rolls of Fuji film, 256mb card, and eight 32mb cards. My camera was stolen at WDW a year ago, and I lost all my pictures on it. I was heartbroken, so now carry smaller cards only. I'd rather miss one shot flipping a card than miss 200 of them on my camera.

I have a Canon and shoot in high res also, and have been very pleased with the output to the point that I'm not taking my 35mm to the parks any more; especially at night or when going to the shows.

MickeyMac, I am so sorry about your stolen camera, I would have been sick. I think we found 3 cameras on our trip in July. We turned all of them in with the hope that they would all be claimed. I wish everyone would turn in things found in the parks. The only thing we lost was Nate's new Buzz light chaser. I still have no idea how that happened.

When I took a film camera, I always took 1 1/2-2 rolls of film per day. Now I use a digital and carry memory cards, 1-128MB, 2-64MB, and 1-16MB. I have a laptop that I download the pictures to.

The higher the resolution setting, the less pictures that fit onto the card. But be wary of too low a resolution setting; your pictures may not turn out as crisp as you would like.

DisneyTeacher - that is soooo nice of you. I know the woman who took the camera, too. I turned when I heard somethig fall out of my backpack and asked if she'd seen anything fall. She said she didn't 'see no camera' and rushed off. It hit me when I went to ask a CM what she was saying. Yes, I was completely heartbroken.

On the good side, when I was in line at lost and found, someone had a VERY expensive camcoder returned to them, and another woman had her pocketbook with all her vacaiton money in it returned. I'm sure mine was a complete abberation. Taught me to download my pics each day, like Jmouse does.

My Sony 3.3 Megapixel gets between 70 and 80 shots on my 128MB memory stick at my maximum resolution. I have a 128 (just picked up at Target for $69.99, btw) a 64 (bought with the camera 2 years ago for waaaaay too much) and an 8 (came with the camera, gets 3 shots at max resolution).

I am fortunate enough to have a laptop that I bring with me. I'll just download all the pics from the camera to the laptop at the end of each day, so I'll never run out of space.

If you look around at this weeks sales, there are memory cards and sticks for cameras that are running about $50 for 128mb. I think they were at BestBuy and CompUSA.

In our case, I took a 256 and a 128. We took 423 pictures in 9 days. We still had plenty of room for more pictures. It also depends on how much your camera compresses the files. It is an issue of both resolution and compression. That is why sometimes you will see 100 pictures left, take about 10, and still have 93 left.

If you have a Staples-Check them out--they have alot of their memory sticks on clearance now (at least where I live in Missouri). I just got a 128 stick for $38.00. I of course bought 2.
