Not so great end to a great weekend....

Well, Friday was my birthday! It was great....except for the fact that I was SWAMPED at work and so overwhelmed all day that I felt like I could not breathe! AND I was the last one in the office at 6:30pm!!!!! What was THAT about?!? :dazed :( I also discovered that my cat was sick when I got home...he was throwing up all over the carpet and he wasn't eating or drinking! I thought he was being stubborn, so I gave him soft food to go along with his dry food.

Anyway, after I got home I went out to dinner with my family (DH, DS, Mom, Step Dad, 2 brothers). We went to a really GREAT Italian restaurant and had a good time!!! I polished off my ENTIRE meal, it was that good!!! (***Anne, I am DEFINITELY taking you here when you come in December!!!!***)! Anyway, Hubby and I were supposed to go out that night while Mom babysat, but I was too tired after such a crazy day! So we decided to call it a night and went home.

Saturday I was running around all day, since it was my son's 2nd birthday party on Sunday! I realized my cat was really sick, as his throw up was almost black and he wasn't himself...not cleaning himself, he was kind of out of it. So I layed with him for like an hour kissing him, petting him and cleaning his eyes that were all yuckie. I knew he had to go to the doctor, I was just hoping he would kick this thing and he would be back to his normal self tomorrow.

Well, my son's bday party went really great. Except for my in laws coming over an HOUR EARLY!!! When we totally weren't ready for them. But whatever, I dealt with it. It was lots of fun! Nathaniel did not sleep all day (he usually takes at least a 2 hour nap at around 12noon)...he had a GREAT time!!! Throughout the course of the day, I checked on my cat a few times and he wasn't moving from the spot he layed in. He was a mess! We were originally going to wait until Monday to bring him to the doctor, but I got really upset and called the Emergency Animal Clinic in Westbury and told them Sammy's symptoms...they told me to bring him right in! This freaked me out...I still had guests, but I was losing it...I was sooo upset! I left and dragged my mom with me so I wouldn't be alone (hubby had to put Nathaniel to sleep and entertain our house guests!!!) Well, NOT SO GREAT news at the doctor after a couple hundred dollars worth of blood tests, x-rays and his exam. He had diabetes and his kidneys and liver were very, very, very bad. Sammy was a VERY, VERY, VERY sick cat. The doctor finally told me that his chance for survival was very slim and that he was in a lot of pain. She said even if they hook him up to an IV and gave him medication, there was only a 20% chance of him recovering...but it would be a VERY painful process and her opinion, would be to put him to sleep.

I was HYSTERICAL crying. Eugene (hubby) and I have had him for 8 1/2 years...we got him together when we moved in together when we were dating in the summer of 1995. I loved that cat...and I had to make the decision to put him to sleep. Needless to say, I was HYSTERICAL CRYING in the doctors office and I couldn't compose myself. My mom was even crying!!!!! We called Eugene and he was upset...sleeping and a little drunk :dazed ...but upset. So I gave the OK to do it and just saying goodbye to him was heartwrenching. I am so upset, I couldn't look at the towel that was in his carrier, I asked them to dispose of it. I also asked my mom to take the cat carrier home with her (although she doesn't have any cats)...but I couldn't look at it.

Anyway, sorry to put such a damper on things, I am trying to be happy since I had a great day with my son and family, but it sure ended up HORRIBLE...My poor little Sammy. I will miss him TERRIBLY. :angel

Thanks for letting me babble, guys. I really do appreciate it...especially since I just got home and hubby is passed out, so I have no one to cry to!!!

It is so hard to have to say goodbye to a pet. He really was a member of your family. It sound as if you gave him a wonderful life full of the best care and most love possible.

You are in my thoughts.

I am SO sorry!!

Some people really don't understand that pets become part of the family, while I am personally more a dog person than a cat I know that they become part of the family...

My thoughts will be with you... it may be a tough week, but you did the right thing... I have some realatives that only think of themselves in a situation like that and keep the cat or dog... at all cost...even the animals!! yikes... You made a tough but wise decission.

Kim, My thought and prayers are with you. I understand. I am so sorry for you. Sammy is in a better place. He is not in pain any longer and no longer will need medications to make him feel better. You did the right thing.

Bless you.

I feel so bad for you. I still remember the day my dog Bernie died and that was over 20 years ago. It is true that pets are every much a part of the family as the people are.

Kimmy, I am so sorry, I know how hard that decision is to make, I've been there. Pets are a real part of our families and when we lose them they are missed greatly. In time your pain will ease but you will never forget Sammy.

On a happier note, I am glad all the birthdays went well.

We had our cat for 15 years so I know how you feel. I was lucky that he never got in real bad health and just passed away in his sleep. I had prayed that I would never have to take him and have him put to sleep so I can feel your pain. After two years I would still look for him. From one cat lover to another it is tough.

Kim, I feel so sorry for you. I was crying with you! I'm actually in a similar situation right now with my dog (not quite yet). He's 12 and having some back issues. I hope I don't have to face the decision you just had to make. In time, the pain will pass and maybe your son can pick out a new kitty sometime soon. I hope you have a better week!! Sending out some pixie dust for you!!

Oh Kim!

That was one hectic weekend.

I am sorry about your cat. We got our dog about the same time and I cannot even imagine not having him around. He is like my other little kid.

I hope that the party went well in spite of your IL's. Mine do that kind of thing too. But as long as Nathaniel had a good time.

I have a nice big hug all ready for you for Wednesday. And you will need to tell me the name of the restaurant if it was that good. ;)

Oh Kim!!!! I AM SOOOO SORRY to hear about Sammy!

You should be proud of yourself for giving him the care you did! Not everyone would leave their child's birthday party to help a sick animal.
The fact that you did, and cared for Sammy when he needed you most, will hopefully bring you some comfort in the future.
My sympathies go out to you and your family, the loss of a pet is really tough.:heart

Kim,

So sorry to hear about your Sammy. It's always hard when you lose a pet that you've grown to love so much. I applaud your caring nature and making the tough decision on the most humane treatment for your sweet Sammy. Please except my sincerest sympathy to you and your family for the loss of Sammy.

On a happier note Happy Birthday #2 to your Nathan and a big happy birthday to you too!!! You've had a tough week here's hoping this week is much better.

Sprinkle, sprinkle, sprinkle - just sprinkling a little pixie dust for good luck ....
