Pixar to End Talks with Disney

Did Eisner Screw this one up!

Quote:
EMERYVILLE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 29, 2004--Pixar today said that it is ending its discussions with The Walt Disney Company to extend their existing five-picture deal, and will begin discussions with other studios to distribute its films beginning in 2006. After completing the final two films under the current agreement with Disney, The Incredibles in 2004 and Cars in 2005, Pixar intends to retain full ownership of its future productions.

"After ten months of trying to strike a deal with Disney, we're moving on," said Pixar CEO Steve Jobs. "We've had a great run together -- one of the most successful in Hollywood history -- and it's a shame that Disney won't be participating in Pixar's future successes."

Under the terms of the existing agreement, Disney will retain the rights to distribute Pixar's first seven films, with Pixar continuing to receive its current share of the profits in perpetuity; and Disney will have the rights to solely finance and produce sequels to the films if Pixar declines to co-finance and produce them under the terms of the current agreement.

To date, Pixar's five films have earned more than $2.5 billion at the worldwide box office and sold over 150 million DVDs and videos.

I was just fixing to post this.

I guess with Disney switching from Traditional Animation to CG Animation movies that they must have had some idea this was going to happen.

Very dumb. Look at Dinosaur. It takes more than nice graphics to make a movie. Pixar had the whole package and now they are being thrown to the wayside it appears.

Well, we may be visiting Pixar World some day.

OK, here is my prediction.

Within the next 6 months, the following three thing will happen:

1. Disney will purchase Apple Computer (market cap 8.4 Billion).

2. Disney will purchase Pixar (market cap 3.6 Billion)

3. Steve Jobs will be the new head of Disney/Pixar/Apple/ABC.

4. Oh, and Roy will return to the board.

Apple currently has nearly 5 billion in cash, and is debt free (ok, they will be debt free next week). Pixar is also cash rich, with about 150 Million in the bank. The net cost to Disney will be about 10 Billion for the two companies. Of course, the top job going to Steve Jobs would have to proceed any of the others above, since he basically controls both Apple and Pixar.

Disney/Pixar movies are some of my most favorite movies of all time. Is there a better movie than Toy Story? It has it all.

Great predictions Mickey, I would like to see all of them come true. Talk about giving Disney stock a lift.......

I actually think Pixar may have reached a peak with Nemo like Disney did with Lion King. I find it hard to see them topping Nemo. You can't keep going up forever.

On the bright side, though, the loss of Pixar will be added ammunition for Roy Disney and Stanley Gold in their efforts to oust Eisner. I don't think their efforts will be successful, but at least it will bring the controversy to the forefront again.

I guess this might be a dumb question, but I am not sure.

Who owns the rights to the characters in the Pixar movies? I am assuming that Disney does but I was wondering if Pixar and Disney break up will it affect the characters and character shows and rides in WDW?

The behind the scenes footage on the Pixar movies make me strongly disagree with you here. Even if they don't have another Nemo, they have had a solid story hit with each of their movies. Disney animated movies have been hit or miss for years now. Pixar actually trys to tell a story while adding as much realism and beauty as possible.

Besides that, Steve seems to be much more motivated in fun and creativity. Much more like Disney was. If he ever ran Disney, I think the money floodgates would be open to help promote new ideas and Magic overflowing into the parks once again... and elsewhere in the company. Sure, their have been some great new ideas under Eisner, but it seems that the company was more aggressive and daring back when Disney ran things. They hit a panic button when he died and they never fully recovered.

...

Wall Street analysts are set to meet with Disney executives in Florida in two weeks, when Mr. Eisner will face tough questions about Disney's future in animation. Its own films have not had nearly the success of those produced by Pixar and Disney has effectively closed its Florida film animation operations.

One film executive suggested that Mr. Jobs could now be considered a candidate to run Disney if indeed Mr. Eisner ever left.
