Disney Decorating
HI! My DH and I are buying a new home. I am decorating my loft(guest room) in Disney Style. Does anyone have any ideas on how to decorate Disney without being too cartoonish? Don't get me wrong I love the cartoonish things but it doesn't go with the rest of our home. I want to kind of do "French-country disney"!!
Any of your tips would be appreciated!!:)

What kind of 'doing disney' do you want to do? You can do something as subtle as balloon poofs in a hidden mickey shape, or something a bit more direct and collect Lennox statues, in say, Beauty and the Beast theme (do they have them??)
I've seen specialty fabrics in subtle Disney prints. I guess what I'm asking is where do you want your Disney to be? in your furniture, fabrics, wall hangings, statuary? Do you have collectibles? We went to AKL three times last year and I fell in love with the theming so much that I decorated our family room along the theme, and found some compatible Waverly fabrics ("Congo" line) I also have a dark bamboo like open etagiere which holds our Disney snowglobe collection. We've wooden giraffes, elephants, and zebras that we bought from the AKL gift shop - I made a lamp out of one of them, others are walking across the fireplace mantal with decorative white lights running along with them. Tinkerbell is a favorite of mine, so she peeks out from the foliage in the room. I've the fiber optic Tink standing on a side table (couldn't put her away after taking down the Christmas tree.) The centerpeice of the pictures over my sofa is an architectural poster of Cinderella's Castle, matted and framed in the colors of the room. It is very subtle, and people come up and try to guess what it is (then do the Big Duh when they figure it out) All the pictures framed in stark collages around that poster are of my family at Disney. It's very subtle to newcomers - they just like the obvious African theming, but those that know me know where all my 'hidden Disney's' are. Have you been to Port Orleans French Quarter?

Mickeymac - I can answer your question about Lenox statues with a Beauty & The Beast Theme - Yes! I know painfully too well that they have them. My DW loves them. We have WDCC items as well. I think they keep the Disney theme, but bump up the quality of the decor above a cartoon feel.
What about certain colors that match the Disney theme? There are a couple of hardware stores that supply Disney brand colors. Check the DisneyStore online for home decor items too. Many things there that might help. If you are going to WDW anytime soon, there is a great place in DTD for ideas.

MickeyMac:
I want my Disney everywhere but subtle!I have a giant plush Mickey and Pluto that are going to relax on the bed(really subtle huh) Ha Ha Ha They will be my big statement in the room! I have black and white photos of Cindy's Castle, the hat at Disney studios, Tree of Life, and Spaceship Earth. They are framed in Black frames with white mats. They look really cool. I don't have any collectibles yet but I plan on starting soon. Those Lenox statues sound nice. I wish you would post some pics of your family room, it sounds really neat!! Thanks to everyone for the help!!

I'm an idiot - it's actually my living room. Yes, I'll post pictures as soon as I get my camera back (left it at my cousin's house - ack!)
I forgot about my family room - it's a Disney golf theme. We've a dark green plush carpet with lightly varigated leaves on it (looks like well groomed grass) with a sandy terra cotta textured wall (the things you can do with paint!) and a ten in golf/seaside border along the top of the wall. We took the drawer pulls off the furniture (all oak) and replaced them with Disney golf balls (looks fantastic on the barrister bookcase) In the border, I've randomly hidden some Disney characters golfing on the greens. There's Disney golf paraphenalia all over. The only 'sanctuary' is my office area, which is heavily loaded with Beauty & the Beast & Castle stuff. I *love* my B&TB tiffany lamp, and the toontown Castle I got for Christmas. the links AJ posted are fantastic - there are loads of ideas on there. How creative are you? Are you willing to try some things? (like the border paper idea - printing off Disney characters to fit, and making stickers out of them and randomly inserting them into the image?) That kind of stuff?

Yeah! I'm pretty good at that kind of stuff, the only thing I have trouble with is coming up with the ideas. If someone gives me the idea I can do it!!:) :D

You could stick with the black and white theme you have started with and use Mickeys colors as accents.
