Living in Orlando area???

To the DC folks who live in the Orlando area, could you post some info about which neighborhoods are nice, how much houses can cost (from the lowest to the obscenely expensive!) and what it is like to live there? Are taxes high? Traffic light? ETc... just curious!

Tigger... you live outside NYC? We do as well... are you across the Hudson, or up in Westchester? We are in NJ. Anyway, we are hoping to relocate someday to Orlando, and I am hoping to get some ideas about neightborhoods or towns or something so we have a way to start the househunting!

We are across the Hudson too. I would love to move to FLA, Orlando or the west coast...I could do it in the next year if all the planets align with the stars and such (it's a real chicken and egg thing...need to find work to live there, need to live there to find work...how do those chickens do it!)

Re: Living in Orlando area???

I have heard about a town called Wynemere (sp?)... is that a good little town? Also, as much as I love all things Disney, I have to say that Celebration seems to have a quality that is very disconcerting. I've only seen it on TV and in ads, but it seems very much like that movie (was it called Ed?) with Jim Carrey living on a TV set... a little too matching, a little too perfect... I need a little grit in my life to make it feel right...

Windermere is a very upscale community located about 12 miles northeast of Disney. It's small, rustic, very expensive and borders on some of the most unbelievable mansions you'll ever see. Isleworth is home to many sports celebrities, including Tiger Woods and Shaquille O'Neal and Tracy McGrady.

Two other very nice areas of Orlando are Metro West and Dr. Phillips. Both are upper middle class and are experiencing tremendous growth. They are close to one another and have lots of new stores and restaurants.

Another nice place to live is Ocoee. Ocoee is the fastest-growing town in Orange County and has become a very popular bedroom community to Orlando. It's 9 miles west of downtown Orlando and probably 13-14 miles from the back entrance to WDW via back roads that completely avoid I-4.

There's a lot more to do in Orlando than just Disney. There's lots of culture -- art, theatre, music; plenty of pro sports -- NBA, PGA golf; and it's a great restaurant town.
