Is DC cookie crazy?

Why is it every time I change pages on DC it wants to put an additional cookie on my machine and trys to put up an advertisement? To top it off, if I disallow the cookie, it logs me off? It is getting annoying.

Re: Is DC cookie crazy?

I don't think you should blame DC. I'm having no such problem.

Re: Is DC cookie crazy?

I have never got a pop-up ad on DC. I've set my browser to accept DC's cookies.

It sounds like you might have a virus or spyware on your computer.

1. Open up "Internet Options" under "Tools" at the top of your browser. The clear your history, cookies, and files (Make sure to delete all offline files as well.).
2. Run a virus scan on your computer.
3. Download "Ad-aware" (free program) at www.lavasoft.com and run a scan for spyware. Delete any files found (The first time you will probably have a lot.)
4. Go back into "Internet Options." Select the "Privacy" tab. Click on "Advance." A new window will pop up. Select "Prompt" for First Party Cookies. Select "Block" for Third Party Cookies.
5. Log back on to DC. When the allow cookie message pops up. Check "remember this setting" and click "accept."

Lastly, if you are using windows, you need to go to the update center and download the Service 2 Pack. It has pop-up blocker.

Re: Is DC cookie crazy?

My machine is clean of viruses and spyware, both scanned for and cleaned 2x week. I have my machine set to notify me when anyone or anything wants access to my machine. I also have it set to allow me to say yes or no to 'their request'. This covers all access, first party, 2nd party, 3rd party cookies, personal infor. requests - any access what so ever and it is stopped and I get notified. I have allowed DC cookies to be placed automatically with notification to me, but not DC 2nd party, DC 3rd party, etc. I believe those are the cookies that the SW is attempting to put on my machine.

Re: Is DC cookie crazy?

I've never had those problems. I scan with McAfee, Ad-Aware, and Spybot every week. I also keep my Firewall up at all times.
One suggestion - I use Maxthon as my IE. It basically is IE, just with perks. It blocks all popups, ads, etc. Maxthon (free) I dunno if it really protects anything, but I like it better.

Re: Is DC cookie crazy?

My suggestion is to get a Mac with OS X (OS X is built on top of FreeBSD Unix which is considered one of the most secure OS you can run)

If you are on Windows get off of IE and get FireFox (it has a built in pop up blocker among other goodies)...learn how to use firewalls, virus protection, and spyware don't just rely on installing software and people giving you advice. Before installing any Microsoft service packs or updates do some research to see if others are having problems and if they are if their system is similar to yours (I know of one company that was taken down for a week by an IT guy that was a little to eager to install SP2).

(I spent most of thanksgiving clearing relatives PC of viruses and spyware...luckly my BIL was there to help and keep me company)

Ooh, yes. Do be very careful of SP2. A number of programs commonly used won't function properly with it installed. Been there.

That might be your problem. Just change your options to not get asked about 3rd party cookies, and you won't get the pop-up's.

BTW, I usually accept first party cookies because I'm going to that website intentionally, and some sites (like DC) require you to have cookies in order to log in. I never allow cookies from 3rd parties, because that is datamining, and I don't want them peeking in on me.

I accept first party cookies on DC but not 2nd or 3rd party cookies. I never said I got pop ups-which I do not get. Just ads (and I successfully block most of the time). It is the 2nd and 3rd party cookies that I deny that log me out when I switch pages on DC. That is what is driving me crazy.

What's the ad, if it's not a pop-up?

WAG - There is a pop up when you respond to a PM that has a receipt on it...it could be that.

Re: Is DC cookie crazy?

I can block all pop-ups and most embedded ads, but when an ad is blocked, I can't tell which was blocked. I am just notified that it is an ad.
Thanks for all of your help. I will eventually figure out how to keep myself logged on. I never did like this new updated software that DC uses. I liked the old one better. This SW seems to waste too much white space and has trouble with long pointers.

Re: Is DC cookie crazy?

My pop-up blocker has never notified me of ad on DC. And the only ad I've ever seen here is the discreet Mouseketrip.com link at the top.

Re: Is DC cookie crazy?

DC does have a lot of cookies. It is simply something that is required to have the great features we have here on DC.
