Possible addition to DisneyCentral

I have a question for everyone. I am considering adding a minor addition to DisneyCentral.com, and I would like everyone's opinion before proceeding. It would be a type of a "store" for users. Members would earn "money", or "mickeys" in this case for posting a thread, replying to a thread, having people look at your thread or by submitting reviews in ReviewCentral. You would then be able to accumulate mickeys and purchase items such as a custom user id (under your username in the posts), change your avatar, change your username or even give someone else a custom user id.

What do you think? I personally think it would be fun, but I am afraid of people posting just to get points, which would create a hassle for me.

Mickey, I am opposed to this. My primary opposition stems from the same concern you already pointed out: "afraid of people posting just to get points" Right now, I appreciate the goodwill and camaraderie generated by the members without any more of a "reward" than one earns by sharing and just being a productive member of a community. Actually, you already offer a special service via the Membership Contest. As a previous member of the winner's circle, I can honestly say that winning was tons of fun because it was unexpected and a nice perk just for participating in DC. And, it is my pleasure to do so!

The idea is a good one but I would also be afraid of people posting just for points or being accused of that. I try to post to everyone even if I don't really have anything to add but I would probably feel guilty if I were earning points.

Perhaps you could go about it a different way. Top poster of the month (very close to your original idea though), best this, best that, best opinion, best story line, best game.

I hope you can think of something that would work. I think the boardmembers would really enjoy it. :D

I could see the "store" idea working in some form, but I don't think it would work based on quantity, but it would on quality.

If there's a "rate this thread" or "rate this user" option in vBulletin, maybe that could be used for other members to rate a thread or user to earn the points. The higher the ratings the community gives to an individual, the quicker they'll earn mickeys.

I think that a rating system would work best because sadly, not everyone on the internet is honest enough to say they're not just posting to get points and really mean it. Basically, in my opinion, having others in the community set the reward level would lead to less abuse or corruption of the rewards.

Speaking of stores... anyone know where I can get a Disneycentral mousepad, t-shirt, or hat? ;)

Mickey, what about starts under our name? After a certain amount of posts a person could receive a star. Like:

1-10 posts = 1 star
11-50 posts = 2 stars
51-100 posts = 3 stars
And so on, and so on.

Thanks for the suggestions. As of right now, I have decided against using this, and I will look into someway that it can be done without having the threat of posting just to gain points. Thanks again.

This sounds like a good idea. I know that people will just post to get "points" but we all can find a way around that. I suggest that members might like anothers good post or helpful information. Then maybe we could use a point system and then click a button under your post and it would give you a point. You might want to have them add an explanation as to why they are awarding a point to a member. This could be an easy solution to the members just poting for the points and not to be kind and helpful to other members. Then you could post a top 10 good members list or something in that category. Since the DC store has opened now, maybe mickey could add like a mug or mousepad to the prizes, or maybe he could stick to his main idea.

just my idea... :)

have a Disney day everyone!

I think Michael Darling had a great idea on ("rate this thread" or "rate this user" option in vBulletin) I don't think it would encite any erounious posts, and we could rate the quality posts or even give a thumbs down.
:)

Mickey- I do think It's a good Idea, but I also think a lot of people would just post for points too and even if they actually were not posting for points, they may be accused of it, therefore taking all the fun out it anyway:(

Watch yourselfo n this one. I tried it on my site and it caused nothing but problems. Some people try taking away poiints just because they don;t like others (if you are looking into the karma thing)

I ended up removing it. Good Luck eithr way.
