Signature Limits in Forum Rules

I have had some feedback concerning the new forum rules, and I had a quick question. What is everyone's feeling concerning the signature limits in the rules. Is it too restrictive or not restrictive enough? Should we ban smilies in signatures? I would appreciate some feedback. You can vote in confidence, and if you don't feel like you want other people knowing your opinion, you can PM your post to me, and I will post it anonymously for you.

Signature Limits

Please limit you signature to five lines or less, small type, and please do not use large type at all. If you have a countdown in your signature, you may have three additional lines. Please do not advertise in your signature. You may put your site in your profile, and it will be linked in all your posts.
By the way, there is an option in your control panel that will allow you to not see signatures in posts. This is a temporary solution, and there are some signatures that I would like to see, particularly countdowns, etc...

Mickey,

Help me out there... What are the cons to sigs? Especially things like smilies being there?

I guess that is what this poll is for. Personally, I think that long, distracting signatures, reduce the quality of the forum, make it difficult for people to read your post and are generally a bother, to borrow a phrase. If you have a low resolution monitor, some signatures could take up the whole page.

I was involved at another board, as a member, not an admin, and their signatures were totally out of control. It was like a contest to see who could have the most annoying and longest possible. They instituted a very strict signature limit, three lines, no smilies, no images and no advertising. Some people complained at first, but after everyone complied, they realized how much better everything looked, and how much easier it was to navigate. Now, it is a very professional looking board, and people love hanging out there.

I personally love reading peoples signatures. I think it is a great way to kinda get to know everyone you are posting with. But I can also see a reason to put a limit on the signature length as well. I voted for 10 lines, because I think that should give anyone plenty of room to say whatever it is they wanna say, but still be short enough so that it doesn't take up too much room. I love the boards here though. I have tons of fun here. :laugh

I went for five lines or less, but I do think that the countdown shouldn't count towards the five. Uh-oh, I better check now-mine might have more than five. Not wanting to be a hypocrite, I'll shorten it if it's too long. :)

i personally think 5 lines is more than enough. it gets way to distracting and people just scroll through those that have a drawn out sig so it probably isnot seen by most anyway. thanks for listening to my opinon.

I'd have to say under 10 and here's why:
My signature easily hits 5 lines with just this info:
  • My "fake" name (Michael Darling)
  • my real name (John)
  • My quote of the moment, which is 2 lines on this monitor, but my smaller monitor is almost 3

Really huge signatures can get distracting, I agree. Signatures can, however, be a place where we can learn a great deal about our fellow posters without ever even having to say a word to each other, and I like that.
