Traveling with Dog? Where can you stay?

We've taken our dog to Orlando twice. The first time we were staying at AKL for 2 days and we found that we could board our dog overnight at the EPCOT kennel and also have them walk him a few times during the day. (Not sure if this program is still active, they were trying it as a trial.) Well, he didn't like being left in the strange kennel and at about 11 AM my phone rings and it's the EPCOT kennel. Boris is really wound up. Well, I walked him, stayed with him for a little while, they put him in one of the outdoor cages that was near the AC vent. He calmed down, guess he needed to see the world. There was no way the hotel CMs were going to let us have him in the room unless he was a service dog. The second time was this past May for the opening of Revenge of the Mummy at Universal. It was much better this time. The Loew's hotel organization allow dogs to stay in your room, no extra charge. They even give you a special do not disturb sign saying there's a dog inside, a water bowl and mat for use in the room. He loved the Hard Rock Hotel, and I loved walking my big dog through the lobby and out around the property. I did miss a classic pic outside EPCOT walking my dog!
So, anyone out there have any other hotels in or near WDW that are dog friendly?

Re: Traveling with Dog? Where can you stay?

None of the hotels allow dogs. The kennel at FW will keep your dog 24 hours a day,but I am not sure of the price. They charge extra for dog walking. I think they really want to encourage you to visit with and walk your own dog daily. Isn't there someone near your home you could pay to watch Fido while you are gone? I would be worried at the park all day wondering how my dog was doing.

Re: Traveling with Dog? Where can you stay?

I do board my dog at our vet, but on occasion we wind up going on another trip shortly before our annual trip to Orlando. Because of this, I don't like boarding him for a week after he was just there two weeks ago. The visit when he was at the Epcot kennel was literally 1 week after we had returned from Disneyland. I don't want to leave Boris (would this be a DDog?) home alone with someone just looking in. It's also developed recently that he's got a serious illness, and the less time he spends in a cage over what remains of his life, the better. I already know all of the Disney dog policies and was hoping that some of you who have also traveled with dogs might know of other hotels in the Disney area that were dog friendly. I also started this post to alert other dog owners who found themselves traveling to Orlando with their dog to a trio of very dog friendly hotels. If Boris had quietly enjoyed his stay at the Epcot kennel, I wouldn't even ask. As for my walking him, well, if I couldn't stand to put him in a kennel, I'd surely find several times during the day to come and walk him. I could probably have even gotten security to meet me at the kennel around midnight so I could walk him then.

All Universal Resorts allow dogs in the rooms! Check them out, they are very, very nice!

Re: Traveling with Dog? Where can you stay?

I'm not sure about WDW, but Disneyland has a dog kennel just outside the main gate. It's not overnight though, but all day. Perhaps WDW has one too?

I don't know about hotels, but I do know that even though I have a dog, I don't think I'd stay in a hotel that allowed dogs.

Since I live close to DL I leave my dog at home, but when we are going to WDW we are boarding her at the vet's where she'll be walked and played with and can bark at all the other dogs. We have a pet sitter coming to take care of the cats at home.

Amerisuites hotels in the Orlando area also allow pets but I am not sure about the size limitations. Just another option...

Re: Traveling with Dog? Where can you stay?

I did a quick search and found this one and this and this. You could also do a search on hotel.com or expedia.com and select pet friendly hotels.

Pets are allowed at the Ft.Wilderness Campgrounds in particular loops but not in a tent or pop-up camper. Maybe you can rent an RV in orlando and stay at Ft.Wilderness? I've thought about this because I hate leaving my pooch at home.

Quality Suites and Masters Inns have size limitations of 25 and 20 pounds. Ours is still over 100. Not an option for large dogs.
So, basically, other than the Loews Universal hotels, there is nothing that is conviniently located so that you're not leaving the park and jumping in your car to walk your dog. It might worlk for some of you, but it doesn't work for my case. To all of you who posted about the various Disney kennels, yes I know where all of them are, but if you read the post that started this thread, my dog didn't do well at the EPCOT kennel and I'd expect much the same at any other park kennel. As for Fort Wilderness, I'm not going to camp out in a rented RV for a week in order to spare my dog a stay at the local kennel. It's just not logical. I guess it's time to start lobbying Disney to allow some dogs to stay in rooms like they do at Universal. Either that or get him accreditation as a service animal, as I've seen a couple people do.

Re: Traveling with Dog? Where can you stay?

You know, you do not need to stay at the Campsite (althogh the cabins are great!) to board your dog there. We put our Nala (big Rotty) there and it was great. It is in the front of Fort Wilderness and very easy to access with parking right there. Great grounds to play with the dog too. don't know why you would need to go any where else. I have some pics if you need any.

Re: Traveling with Dog? Where can you stay?

What I meant was, I wasn't going to rent the camper so the dog could stay with me. He didn't do too good in the EPCOT kennel, and remember, EPCOT's kennel will walk your dog during the day too. It had more to do with driving 200 miles and being thrown in a strange place all alone. He did much better in room at the Hard Rock, but that's not around the corner from WDW. Thanks for the suggestions, but they don't work well for my needs. I was hoping for a trick or a miracle I guess.

Re: Traveling with Dog? Where can you stay?

When my DH and I were looking into this also 2 years ago I remember that there was a Holiday Inn on International Drive that allowed you to bring your dog and there was no size limit. If I can find the info that I printed up and put away I will send it to you.

Soundgod: Do you know what HRH policies are on dogs? I tried to look on their site and like you said before all the Universal hotels let you bring your dogs but they dont tell you much more. I was wondering if you knew how many dogs you are allowed in the room, size restrictions and can you walk your dog around the resort (near the pool etc)? Thanks

DH and I have 3 dogs... We love to bring all 3 of them down but I dont think that is such a good idea. So what we thought was that we would take 1 this time 1 the next time etc. And the other 2 can stay at grandma's while we are gone.
