Buses And A Toddler?
Hi all,
Ok, I have now decided to begin my plans for our vacation in January and I am concerned a little with transportaion. DH and I do not want a car whilst on vacation and want to rely on Disney Transportation ( as we always have done) for getting to and from places. The only problem is, we have a DD who will be 21 months and I am worried that she will not be able to ride on the buses as I have just read a passage on allears about Florida law and children on transport. Will we be ok or are we heading into a nightmare? We will probably dedicate this ( our 6th trip ), solely to Disney but in case we want to go to Seaworld too, do you know of any safe and relaible cab companies who have infant car restraints? ( I realise this is probably a stupid question so don't laugh...) but as you guys in the us are usually sooooooo clued up and advanced on things I thought i'd ask!!!! sorry to have waffled on for so long but im a bit worried xxxxxxx |

What did you read at Deb's site? Can you send a link? I'm not aware of anything that would prevent you from taking a toddler on public transportation/mass transit.

Re: Buses And A Toddler?
We took our 7 month old, and again when he was 18 month old to WDW. We used their transportation every minute and just held our child. I was worried about the safety issue, too, but we had no problems at all. You are not alone holding your child on the bus. It was much easier than using our car to go everywhere. We even took the monorail everywhere we could and the kids loved it!!!!

Children on VERY crowded busses can be a small problem. Just be sure to hold them in your lap, if you are seates, or push them into a corner if you HAVE to stand. Most people are wonderful and will at the minimum give up their seat for your child. I do not know of any FL laws preventing this.

Re: Buses And A Toddler?
I also give my seat up for the elders and moms (or dads) with little ones. It's also fun to Bus Surf standing anyways.
Have Fun!

Re: Buses And A Toddler?
I did the busses with infants and toddlers .. happy not to be doing that now, but it can be done and is done all the time ..and always give my seat up for moms with babies or toddlers .. my granddaughters do this too. Once on this last trip the girls and I tried to give our seats to a family with 2 little boys and they said no ..the boys liked sitting on the floor.. but I have stood holding a sleeping child at the end of a long day in the parks .. its more the walk back to the room that can be tough *grin* .. one of the funniest things on one of our recent trips was a little guy about 4 told my husband (who was on the bus in his wheelchair) "Your lucky you always have a seat on the bus" .

Re: Buses And A Toddler?
Ariel, sorry I did forget about the exhausted kids at the end of the day! (The bad parts of the vacation are always forgotten). It does make a huge difference what time of year that you go. We went in 2003 and were on a bus by ourselves at about 10:00 one morning- so that does factor into it!!!

Re: Buses And A Toddler?
I did buses, monorail, boat rides, a few years ago with my then just-turned, 2 year old and other 2 DS's - we had no problem except them being a little squeemish, and it being a little difficult during crowded bus times. I would recommend that whenever you can take a boat or monorail, do that before the buses. Also, I did not bring a stroller from home, planning to rely on renting one in the parks. I wish I would have brought one just for the resort not realizing how expansive it was going to be. At the time my DS was a little big for a 2 year old. I was also worried about the amount of rides he was going to be able to ride. I was pleasantly surprised that there were a lot + the parades and everything. He even still remembers a lot of things. After we got home, he said - no, not this home. He thought WDW was our new home - I wish! He has also asked every year to have his birthday party at WDW with all his friends, of course - hee, hee. I found it no trouble changing him in the restrooms during a busy season as well. You are going to have fun!

Hi all, before i go on to thankyou all for your splendid advice, MAtt, this is the link which got me concerned in the first place. Mind you Im guessing that this law applies to things like Mears shuttles/cabs for example. anyway, i really appreciate all the help you guys give. Makes things a little less scary. The only thing that concerns me now about the travelling side of things is our transfer from the airport to the hotel ( after all, we won't have a car seat with us) . I guess only our airline can comment on that one but if anyone can shed any light on what happens to people like us who don't wish to drive abroad and have transfers booked....that would be great. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxa |
