Trip to your home airport
Does anyone else have this same problem:
We live outside NYC and fly out of LaGuardia which is always cheaper. We get great rates ($140-$175 RT) of the flights which means that we spend about $800-$900 for the 5 of us to fly. Pretty reasonable, I think. However it costs a small fortune to get to the airport. We need a van (5 plus luggage) and it costs us about $320-$400 roundtrip including gratuity. That just seems like a lot compared to our airfare. Does this happen to you??

Re: Trip to your home airport
I have the same dilema. I could save a bundle by flying out of Atlantic City, but when I factor in the costs of getting there and the extra time traveling to the further airport (over an hour), I just say "forget it". I pay the extra dollars and avoid the hassle of the cheaper ticket. It's probally not the most economical decision, but I hate hassle. What is the cost difference to rent the van etc for you? If you aren't saving a bundle, is it really worth it? I can see going through that for a hundred or more, but for less, I wouldn't even bother.

Re: Trip to your home airport
whenever we fly from NYC (we are in CT ) I have someone drop us off and pick us up- I will throw them $100 for the time spent. But I try to do it from Hartford using either priceline or southwest whenever I can.

Re: Trip to your home airport
We have used a shuttle service the last couple of times we have travelled. The cost for us is about $80 one way for a van. We are about 25 miles from the airport, but no tolls on the way either.

Re: Trip to your home airport
at my last job I flew out of JFK all the time my company paid me for parking for the time I was gone but it was cheaper for me to take the CT Limo shuttle bus that runs the I-84 corridor, yah its a long trip from Hartford but I picked it up in danbury so it wasn't to bad. always had great service from the bus drivers there. However when I return to CT in a few more weeks I will fly into Bradly (hartford Ct) its much eaiser.
the cost of living is a lot higher in that area of the country and it doesn't surprise me that the cost is that high. |

Re: Trip to your home airport
Last time we flew out of Phila. which is about a 2 hour drive for us, because we got an awesome deal on airfare. We drove ourselves so we had to pay for parking. Next time, we are going down the night before and then leaving our car at the hotel and using their shuttle to the airport. It costs the same as parking and you get on your flight refreshed from a night's sleep rather than hasseled from the trip to the airport. Check out parksleepfly.com for hotels near your airport.

Re: Trip to your home airport
I have used CT Limo and it was soooooooo- loooooooong! It made like 6 stops before it got to where I needed to get on and off in the Hartford area. I always have a sister or friend I can bribe with a 100 dollar bill

Re: Trip to your home airport
We're very fortunate. We live so close to the airport that we often watch planes land at night from DD's window. We're hiring a towncar to pick us up, drive 7 miles to pick up the kids from school and then back into Logan for our flight. It'll be about $110, including tip.
I like the idea of having family help you out, that's certainly a much more affordable way to go. A $100 bribe and a gift from Disney should be a good compromise. They could use the $100 to treat themselves to dinner in the city. Also, have you considered calling a cab company that has minivans? I imagine that might be a little more affordable. How far a drive is it?

Re: Trip to your home airport
for us it would be better to try other airports- for the savings you think you are getting you have to pay for all of the inconvenience. We are paying $150 per person on southwest and its nonstop and out of hartford. Only 30 min from home and my Father in law is driving us there and picking us up. We could have gone from either NYC, Providence or from Boston but the cost was about the same in the end and a 2 hour addition to the trip is not worth it with 3 kids.

Re: Trip to your home airport
We received awesome air out of Philadelphia through Disney's Travel Company. Less than $160 RT per person. Not bad especially with 13 people. We were going to have several different people take us to the airport since we all have people staying at our houses withour dogs, but decided on a shuttle. Our entire family is into dogs so we were lucky to find people to stay in our homes while we are gone. Three stops for the shuttle and we live about 40 minutes from the airports and it is running us $500RT (all inclusive - fare, tax, gratuity. Actually that isn't too bad for alleviating us of the hastle. We have enough of that with trying to remember all the luggages, etc.

Re: Trip to your home airport
PArking in Hartford CT is only about $6 or $7 dollars, which is the cheapest I haver seen. We are flying out of LGA this time, and it is much more to park - cheaper to fly. ($102.00 RT!!!)
LGA is about $20 a day, we are looking into options. Den
