A airline tip I've learned

I posted this in PalMickey's TR, but thought it might be worth mentioning in it's own thread.

I've been traveling more frequently for work the last couple of years, and I've learned that if I travel with another person, the best way to go is to reserve the aisle and window seats in the same row. If the flight is not full you will usually end up with a nice empty seat between you, because the center seats are usually the last to sell.

If the middle seat does sell, 90% of the time the person will be willing to trade for the window or aisle because they did not want the center anyway. It's a risk worth taking for an empty seat and extra room.

That's what DS and I do! I've never had anyone say, "No, I don't want the aisle. I'd rather sit in the middle..."

Re: A airline tip I've learned

Gosh, that's a good one!

Ordinarily all the flights I take are booked solid, but last month when I traveled to SF my daughter and I were lucky to sit in a row w/o a third person. It was very comfortable to be able to stretch out. On flight out, we actually had another passenger sitting next to us in the aisle seat but he offered to move when he saw that there were lots of empty seats around us. On the flight home, we just lucked out: no one had purchased the seat next to us.

In the future, I'll try this tip. Can't hurt. Thanks for sharing.

I read your post in Pal Mickey's and thought that that was an excellent idea. So the next time the family (we don't travel much anymore) gets on a plane this tactic will be employed for sure

Re: A airline tip I've learned

Thanks for the great tip! Maybe I will be able to use that in October. We will be five of us. If we have a plane that is six seats across that would be great as then the little one (will be 3) will have a little room to color or at least move a little bit. Thanks!

Re: A airline tip I've learned

We even use it when there are the three of us traveling. We book the window & the aisle, and then the aisle in the row across from us. Sometimes we're home free, sometimes we have to switch out a middle person. But it's nice when it works out!

Re: A airline tip I've learned

I normally fly SW, but it's still a good tip to use there.

My friend and I have flown to FL together a couple of times. We sat together in the window and middle seat, and we've had the end seat taken on us a few times. I'll bet we'd make out better using your method.
