A Little Airport Confusion

Hi all, I've never been to Orlando before so I have some airport questions. I'm getting the impression that there are two different airports: MCO and ORL. Is this correct? If so, is one closer to Disney than another? Is one better than another? Any idea of average traveling times to the airports? Any help would be appreciated I'm searching for a one way flight for my Dad from Orlando back to Denver and I'm not sure if I'm searching the right airports! Thanks and sorry for so many questions, hopefully they are too obvious.

Re: A Little Airport Confusion

I think most flights go into MCO. I've never had a choice flying from the midwest. I'll be interested to see what others say.

If you fly into MCO you will be really close to Disney. It took me about 20 minutes to get to Disney from MCO.

Re: A Little Airport Confusion

ORL is Orlando Executive Airport. I think everytime I've put it in as a search option I've automatically gotten flights to MCO. My impression is that it's a smaller airport with charter flights, but I don't really know. MCO is the big airport that almost everything goes through.

That is correct, MCO is the airport where most flights go thru. There are some smaller airports around the area but they are for a lot smaller planes.

Re: A Little Airport Confusion

MCO is Orlando International Airport, the area's largest and most heavily traveled provider. Orlando Executive Airport is just a few miles from downtown Orlando and caters to corporate travelers and private aircraft.

There is another airport in the area, Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB), that some tourists use to escape MCO's congestion. SFB, much smaller in size, is 18 miles northeast of Orlando. It's quite a haul from there to Disney, but SFB does offer good ground transportation options.

MCO is the airport you want, though.

If you are trying to book a flight from Denver (the "Gateway to the West", my friends, *not* the midwest), I would suggest going on either Frontier or United (Ted) direct to MCO. You can get a Ted flight at 8:30am that arrives around lunch time, or a 10:30 am flight on Frontier that gets in around 4 (that's the flight my DM prefers). Right now prices are not especially cheap, but they can get as low as around $220.

Good luck!

Re: A Little Airport Confusion

Thanks for all the help! I really appreciate it and all is clear now! I've found a great deal out on frontier (I LOVE that airline) and we will probably book it in the morning. Thanks again everyone, you are great! :)

Re: A Little Airport Confusion

Peoria was advertising flights from its airport to ORL. The flights were cheap ($60 one-way), BUT it was over an hour to WDW, and by the time you paid regional transportation, it was cheaper to drive to Chicago and fly to the main airport.

Peoria cancelled that daily flight in January because people were discovering that fact.

Re: A Little Airport Confusion

Id really reccomend Sandford. We've flown in both times we went and had a smooth transition straight through the airport. It is quite a way out from disney but nothing too bad, id say around 40mins-ish away.

My bad--it was Sandford Airport. I was told the drive was about 1 hour each way.

Re: A Little Airport Confusion

It's an hour's drive from the airport in Sanford to WDW -- on a good day. It's about 45-48 miles depending on which route you take -- either straight down I-4 or the Central Florida Greenway (417 toll road). Depending on the time of day you're traveling, though, this can be a long, nightmarish drive. If you're out there during rush hour, bring food and water -- and maybe a tent.
