Airfare - to gamble or not

I am looking for good airfare prices for October and am coming up empty handed. The cheapest price I can come up with is $217 a person for a round trip. This is a bit more than I am used to paying. I have never paid over $180 a person. So my question is: Would you book now and be safe or wait to find a sale later. With the constant rise in fuel prices, I am wondering if they are going to go up.....I don't know what to do. Suggestions?

Fuel prices are going to increase fares. I think they will go back down, but not soon.

My brother flies with Northwest, and it appears the airlines are going to be forced to increase prices to actually pay for the fuel to move the plane. I guess it depends if you can afford the $40.00 difference.

I can't remember where you are, but have you tried Jetblue? Next to SouthWest, there fares are really good. They don't show up on expedia, you have to go to their website directly..

Re: Airfare - to gamble or not

This was the exact same dilema I ran into two weeks ago! I checked for about two months and very week or two it was up about $10. I kept waiting for Southwest to publish but they were only doing a handful at a time. We too had never flown to WDW for more than $180 per person and the rates were around $267 when started to look. That made me crazy and I tried to stay hopeful, but the fuel prices kept rising. I did some more research and decided to go with a Delta flight that was $307. (Continental wanted $672) It was the cheapest direct flight I could fine. I hated to spend it, but risking further increases would kill me more!

It is totally up to you, but I would hate to see you have to be raised $40.00 per person trying to get a better rate! I am not sure we are going to see relief on this front for a while!

Good luck and I will keep my fingers crossed for you!

Re: Airfare - to gamble or not

I can either fly out of philly or Atlantic city if the price is right. I don't think that Jet Blue flies out of either airport. I can't see the fares coming down much more...maybe if I wait for a last minute deal, but I will have heart failure putting it off to long. I hate things pending. I am going to hope for a memorial day sale and if I don't see anything, I think I am just going to book. I don't want to pay another $40 more.....no thanks.

OUCH! That is a lot for a flight. I think I am going to just book. I am seriously worried about paying even more than the $217 a person. At least that is only $37 more than normal. If it goes up another $40, I am going to have to drive....we cannot have that.

Re: Airfare - to gamble or not

Dana it's funny you should mention that b/c I started looking for November airfare and I was SHOCKED! $287. Newark to Orlando!! We're used to paying about $210.-$240. from Newark. It's a hard to call to make as far as "pruchase now, or wait" b/c for our minitrip last week I paid only $180 last minutes which is WAY less than I am used to but for August we got stuck paying $280. ahead of time. Weird. I just DO NOT get airfare! Keep us updated!! Best luck with finding the perfect price!

My guess is that $217.00 is NOT a bad deal at present. But I am afraid that it will more likely go up before it goes down.

I would hold off for two weeks for a memorial day sale.. That might be your best bet..

Re: Airfare - to gamble or not

Well it's a done deal. I called my DD's friend's mother and we talked about it. She is paying for her DD's ticket and I figured she had a say it what we did as to wait or not. After talking for a bit, we decided to just grab them and be done with it. The worse thing is a major airfare sale and we paid $37 to much.. We just didn't want to take the chance of the price going up, so we got three seats round trip on Spirit out of Atlantic City for $217 a piece or $651.30 for three. I still think we paid to much, but who wants to take the chance of paying more than that? Not me. Thanks all for your thoughts on this. I am just glad it's one less thing that I have to worry about. I could have grabbed the same exact price on airtran going out of philly, but decided to try Spirit. DD's friend and family (the one who is going with us) went to WDW over Christmas week and they flew out of AC using spirit. They loved it. Her mother told me that it was a nice change from the Philly airport. She said the parking was cheaper and the airport smaller and easier to navigate. So we went for it. I got the first flight out as usual for 7am...means I will have to be up at 3am, pick up DD's friend by 4:15 to make it to the airport by the 90minute check. Oh well...it's all good. We will be so excited that morning that we won't even feel the tired..lol

Re: Airfare - to gamble or not

We were in the same spot you were in March for our June flight. We kept flip flopping on whether to wait for a sale to book. We finally just went ahead and booked it and I was glad I did because now all the flights we wanted for our dates going and coming are all already sold out and the price never did go down.

Well done!

But $217.00 isn't the most expensive ticket one can pay...

One of the reasons I don't frequent the mouse as often as I'd like....

And Coach is only $1,200.00, so I don't mind spending the extra $600 for the comfy seat on a ten hour flight....

Re: Airfare - to gamble or not

Dana,

We just booked Jetblue out of JFK for $217 for our November trip. I think this is the future that we face. The fuel costs have to go somewhere.

Re: Airfare - to gamble or not

Glad you booked it Dana. $37.00 is not worth the hassle.

I'd be over the moon if we could get prices like that (more like $600.00) - thank heavens for frequent flyer points.

Yeah I am afraid the prices have no where to go but up. I called southwest to see if they knew when they were going to release their flight schedule for my travel time and they didn't know. Right now the prices are the same as what I am paying for Spirit. I am just glad the "hunt" is over. I'm ok with it I guess. I booked my towncar too....this is when you really start to get into the planning.

llama -
I am so glad you have those frequent flyer miles. I can't imagine the prices otherwise when you come in from Canada.

Re: Airfare - to gamble or not

Congrats on getting your airfare, Dana. I don't know that you over paid with the price of fuel right now. I've been watching SWA's sales and DINGS! and they are no where near as good as last summer. We got our seats for $5 more than last year but I think we got lucky. The DINGS that were so great last year are very limited this year, most are for only the middle of the week (Tuesday & Wednesday) and I'm not sure there are as many seats.
