Traveling with a toddler? TSA do's and don'ts

For anyone headed to WDW with a toddler in tow, I found this great article which specifically states what can and cannot be brought onboard with your child. I thought it may be helpful to some of us with little ones!

In August 2006, a foiled terror plot in London involving planes bound for the United States unleashed a whole new level of air travel restrictions. Because the terrorists planned to blow up the jets by detonating explosives made from common sport drinks, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is now banning all liquids and gels from carry-on baggage. That means beverages, medicines, and even baby formula could raise red flags at airport security checkpoints, making travel with little ones tricky, but not impossible.

Jane Devron was traveling from Chicago to New York with her baby boy, John Patrick, soon after the news broke and rules went into effect. She recalls, "I packed some pumped breast milk in a mini cooler and was somewhat embarrassed that they had to closely examine it. I had to tell the lady what it was. They also tried to take his Desitin, but I managed to salvage that. Other than that, it really wasn't very difficult."

Here's what parents should know before they go, according to the latest TSA alerts:

Formula, Breast Milk, and Other Beverages

As long as you're traveling with a baby or toddler, you're still allowed to carry baby formula and breast milk in carry-on baggage. You can bring these items through security checkpoints and aboard the plane.

Security officers will not test or taste (or even ask you or your child to test or taste) the formula or breast milk.

To minimize hassles, bring only as much formula or milk you need to get your baby to your final destination.

Juice and other liquids are prohibited.

Baby Food and Medications

If you're traveling with a baby or toddler, you may also bring cans or jars of baby food in your carry-on baggage and aboard the plane.

As for liquid medications, you may bring prescription medicine as long as the name on the bottle matches the passenger’s ticket. You can also carry up to four ounces of non-prescription liquid medicine, such as cold or cough syrup.

Baby Care Items

Creams, even rash creams, are high on the TSA's list of prohibited items. Though inspectors may make exceptions for some baby care items, you can play it safe by packing all skincare supplies in your checked baggage. (Try applying a thicker-than-usual layer of diaper cream before leaving for the airport.)

If you're in a pinch, you're free to purchase and use lotions and creams beyond security checkpoints, however these must be disposed of before you board the aircraft.

Gel- or liquid-filled teethers are fine to bring through security and onto the plane.

Your Phone, Computer, and Personal Items

Laptops, iPods, cellular phones, and other electronic devices will be inspected by security but are still allowed in your carry-on baggage.

Only solid personal care products (such as lipstick, powder, and bar soap) are allowed past security checkpoints. Lip balms and glosses, shampoo, hand sanitizer, and aerosol and roll-on deodorants are all among the banned liquids and gels. Pack your toiletries in your checked baggage and don't risk having to throw them away.

Because the toughest task of all may be navigating longer-than-usual lines as you travel with your baby in tow, be sure to pack your bags carefully and arrive at the airport early.

Re: Traveling with a toddler? TSA do's and don'ts

I had read on here how one woman had to throw out her highlighter before she was able to board. Is that still an issue? If so i assume it holds true for all types of markers, correct?

Also, what about baby wipes? Can we bring those?

Thanks for the list, Crystal!

What about regular milk for a 1 year old? I know it says all beverages except for breastmilk and formula are BANNED, but a little 1 year old needs to be hydrated. Do you have to wait until you get onboard and ask the stewardesses for milk? They are gonna be BOMBARDED once everyone gets on the plane, especially since you can't even take on bottles of water or coffee or anything! I am getting parched just thinking about it...

I'd pack it in a bottle and call it formula.

Re: Traveling with a toddler? TSA do's and don'ts

I know that when I used to work at JetBlue (JFK) back in 2002, you simply couldn't bring anything in the gates from the outside past security. Once you passed the security gate, you could buy whatever food you wanted from the restuarants inside and bring it on the plane. That could have all changed recently.

I will NEVER forget this from my experience flying in May of 2002...I was holding a bottle of fruit punch from outside. As I went through the security check, the security officer said NOW OPEN THAT BOTTLE AND DRINK FROM IT. I was like IT'S NOT MINE, IT'S MY BROTHERS (who was already through). She said I DON'T CARE, DRINK IT. So I did. After that, she did let me bring it.

Has anyone flown with a 1 yr old yet? By the way, Southwest doesn't carry milk on board. My DD asked about it and she was told she could get water for the baby right way but juices would have to wait until after take off.

They are checking passengers at the gates to make sure that don't do this.

Re: Traveling with a toddler? TSA do's and don'ts

I was concerned because I was reading all of the things not to bring from the TSA Website and it talked about shout wipes, etc... SO I wondered about baby Wipes for diaper changes and also about Markers since one MB member talked about how her sister had to get rid of a highlighter. I called Southwest and the woman I spoke with said her co-worker and his family flew this past weekend and they were able to bring baby wipes and they even brought those color wonder markers so I should be fine. I just thought I would share incase anyone had the same concerns!
