Cheaper Flights into Tampa....

If you are going to rent a car, it would definitely be worth flying into Tampa vs. Orlando.

I tried booking a flight into Orlando for 3 and it would have cost us around $1200., flying US Air. Being we had flown into Tampa once before, due to a hurricane, I checked out the flights and woohoo, saved us $600.00 by booking a flight arriving in Tampa from Philly. There were so many more flights to choose from than what I had to choose from flying into Orlando. We will now have the entire day on our departure day instead of just checking out and leaving for the airport.

Definitely pays to check out other airports in the surrounding areas of your departure city and arrival city.

It's very easy- we've done this since my brother lives in Tampa. Take US 4. I'd drive an extra 2 hours (total roundtrip) to save $600! Thanks for sharing with everyone!

Re: Cheaper Flights into Tampa....

VERY nice tip...even if you weren't going to really use a car, $600 and more options might be worth thinking about....

Re: Cheaper Flights into Tampa....

We did the trip once, but used a towncar service. We had to be in Tampa for a friend's wedding, and who wouldn't add in a trip to WDW? I don't remember it being 2 hours. I seem to remember it being closer to an hour and a half, but I could be very wrong.

I took Lesleigh to mean an hour each way.

If that's true, it's definitely something to consider.

It's very easy, I think it is Route 4 all the way. If I remember correctly, it is between 45 minutes to an hour. Haven't done it on the last two trips, but we would take a day and go to Clearwater. Tampa also has counter and bus to lot car rentals. I went on their website to see which were in the terminal. They are Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz, Enterprise and Thrifty.

We also had more choices for departing and return flight times than if we flew into Orlando.

Yes, that's what I meant! With no traffic, I remember that it was a little over an hour each way.
Mario Andretti was driving...

Re: Cheaper Flights into Tampa....

We have flown many times to Tampa, we tend to rent from Alamo they tend to be very reasonable and on our March trip we rented a full size, to our surprise they had the vans in the full size category. This was fantastic as we needed a vehicle for six passengers. The drive time can vary, I would say an hour is if the traffic moves well, but could be longer if you are travelling during rush hour or if there is construction. I think the saving is definitely worth it.

Re: Cheaper Flights into Tampa....

It is just under 80 miles from Tampa International Airport to the Walt Disney resort. I live just east of Tampa and can make the trip in a hour. It would probably take you an additional 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic.

Hey Nastory4, I grew up in Ringwood, NJ (Stonetown, Lake Riconda to be exact). Married and moved to PA in 1988.

Anyhow, good luck on the airfare:)

Re: Cheaper Flights into Tampa....

I find that flights from NYC are the same to both Orlando and Tampa. Therefore, the one-hour drive may not be worth it for New Yorkers.
