Car seats for rental cars

Our next trip to WDW will be Oct 2003 and we will be taking 3 grandchildren, 2 years, almost 3 years and almost 4 years.

Rather than carry 3 car seats around with us for our rental mini-van, I would like to know if anyone has ever rented car seats from their rental car company.

Were they decent car seats and how much did they charge?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

graybill

Graybill, my sister rented from Alamo and got a very nice seat. It was pretty expensive. I believe she paid $10 including tax A DAY. You can a seat and just leave it in the airport for that price. I have three children all in carseats. We always take our seat with us. It really isn't a bother. I wrap them large garbage bags with our info on the inside and outside. Then check them with our luggage.

Delta even supplied bags one year.;)

We have in the past, and it isn't a good experience. The seats are usually the really hard plastic indestructible kind, and are not great seats. Also, I think they charge something like $10 per day per seat, so you would be racking up a big charge there.

One option is that most vans now come with built in seats. I would suggest calling the rental car company and asking them if their vans include those. That way, you would only have to worry about one seat, and you could handle bringing one. Just check it with your other luggage.

By the way, I can't believe that you are taking three kids under 4 to WDW with you. Most parents would never do that, let along grandparents. You have a lot of guts, I hope everything works out well for you!

Car seats for rental cars

Thanks for the input! I'll look into those options.

Mickey, I'm not that brave. Their mothers, 2 of my daughters, are going as well.

It is $10 per day with National, Dollar, Thrifty, and Avis. We always bring ours because of the cost. I've seen some and they were what Mickey described. 3 would be a hassle to keep up with but I like Mickey's idea of checking one and seeing if you can get the built in ones in the van.

If you purchased a seat for the two year old, even the trhee year old I would bring the seat onto the plane and secure the child in the seat with it. We did that with our youngest until he was 4. The down side is lugging them through the airport. The up side, for us anyway, was that as soon as the plane starting moving he was out like a light and didn't wake until we landed!

Funny story, we strapped him in NY and he went right to sleep even before we lifted off. We landed in Orlando he woke up, looked out the window and started to cry. My wife asked him what was wrong (He was 3 at the time) and he looked up and said "But we're still here!" he thought we were still in NY! LOL:)

If you have seats for the kids on the plane definetly take your car seat for the plane. They know their seat and feel secure in a strange environment plus its safer if there is turbulence. Then just pop them in the rental when you get there. Take a stroller with you to the gate at the airport to help you carry the car seats (I had two car seats the last trip and this worked great). Then the attendants stow the stroller right under as you are boarding. makes a great luggage/car seat carrying cart!! The only downside is security -- you got to put all the seats and stoller/s up on the conveyor belt to be x-rayed. This can be a pain but thats the way it is today!

It will be a challenge to carry the car seats for each child, but definately worth it. My little boy was uncomfortable being on a plane...but very comfortable in his car seat with his blankie. It made all the difference.

Hi! Last year, I rented a car seat for my then 7 month old son. We rented through Dollar and it was $6 plus tax a day. We are going back this year and definitely plan to bring ours with us. It seems like now the cost is so much more. For the price you pay to rent one, you could have bought one!!! So my advice is to just bring them along...if you have others traveling with you, they can help you carry them! :)

Car seats for rental cars

Thanks again for all the helpful advice. The more it is mentioned, the more it sounds like having the seats on the plane may be helpful for the children, especially since it will be their first plane ride. We may just have to deal with carrying them around with us.

In the long run the pros outweigh the cons. It is worth the hasle to have them on the plane. Good Luck and have a great time!
