I know i am jumping the gun but for me it works better to buy a little here and a little there then all at once.

I went shopping and bought a 30" duffle bag that has rollers and pockets I got it for 19.00 regularly 30.00 . I thought it would be easy for my son to pull along. I know people check huge items but I do they pay extra to check those big items???

Its a really nice bag, but I don't plan to keep it if I have to pay up the butt to check it either.

I'm sure it varies with airline but this is SWA'as policy: Maximum weight is 50 pounds and maximum size is 62 inches (length + width + height) per checked piece of luggage.

Both spirit airlines and us airs is the same as disneytecher mentioned. I have to weigh my luggage after my last packing just to be sure. I am always in the 48pound range..lol I would check with the airline that you are flying with. Their website should have the luggage restrictions some where on there clearly stated.

AA is also the same - 62 inches, 50 lbs for the largest bag, per person. So you can have one that size for each person with a ticket, including kids.

That's a great price for a duffle, so if you think you're going to be buying lots of stuff , or at least bulky stuff , while you're there, it might be worth picking up an extra one to stuff in another bag, just in case...

I think you'll be fine. Given the fact that you're going to want your son to be pulling it along I don't think you'll get it past the 50 pound mark. VERY rarely have I seen someone charged extra and I liked the idea of buying another one to stuff all of your goodies in for the return.

I always start buying the necesseties a few months before our trip. Same as your thinking, keeps you from having to buy everything all at once. You don't notice the cost as much if buying things here and there. Each week of food shopping I add a few things for our trip to the list. I've already started and our trip isn't until May.

As others have mentioned, check your airline's website to be sure. Make sure you put anything liquid in ziplock bags too. I usually pack and way, pack and way. US Air use to charge $25. a bag over the weight limit. I don't know if that has changed in 2 years or not. Over the years I have gotten lighter with the clothes since we now do laundry while we are there. Lightens the bags a little.

My you two together are light peoples ha ha ha.

The thing that stinks is that they don't take into account how much the bags weight before packing! We have 2 gigundo bags and 1 smaller for DS so he can drag it. I just hope with all the restrictions, that we can still use them. I really do not want to go out and buy new bags. I'll have to check US Air's website to be sure.

Ok, just measured our largest bag and it is 30" so just have to make sure we stay under 50 pounds for each bag and there will be no additional charges.
