Airline frustration!!!!!

I don't know what other airline's policies are but, apparently Spirit just decided that they charge for your checked luggage. They allow you one free carry-on bag only. Your checked luggage is $5 per bag for the first two bags....it's a $100 a bag for bags 3 to 5 if you bring that much luggage. This is per person and per leg. It just cost me $40 for me and my DD to take two bags per person for our WDW trip in august. If you don't do it online and in advance, they charge you double at the airport when you check in. $80!!! are you kidding me??? With airline fares not being as cheap as they use to be, is this really necessary? Are other airlines doing this too or just spirit?

Here's the link.
Spirit Airlines - cheap tickets, cheap flights, discount airfare, cheap hotels, cheap car rentals, cheap travel

Well, if it makes you feel better, I got hit for $80.00 for a third bag on Hawaiian..

My brother flies for Northwest.

My guess is the cost of fuel is such that just passage alone doesn't cut it anymore.. Sorry to hear 'bout it.

Re: Airline frustration!!!!!

I guess the fuel is it...still on top of the $494 I paid for the tickets, I think another $40 is a bit much. You should at least be allowed ONE checked bag person with the price of the ticket. The rest could be a fee...sheesh. I know $40 isn't a lot of money, but on top of what I already paid to use this airline, it's wrong.

Yeah, the airlines are looking for ways to be competitive..

Which is one of the reasons food went away. I keep forgetting, 'cause Hawaiian always feeds me..

But it is fuel. My July trip is toast as Air New Zealand isn't the cheap business class anymore. Coach ain't cheap either..

Re: Airline frustration!!!!!

That is just ridiculous in my opinion. They just seem to be looking for extra ways to squeeze more money from people everyday. I refuse to fly anything but Continental, unless absolutely necessary, and I've never had a problem with them once. No extra charges, still get small meals, free movie/entertainment programs, etc. But also Continental is huge in Newark and I know other airports are heavy on other carriers. Either way, it's just ridiculous.

I agree. Checking bags of just part of it, most people travel with checked luggage.

Re: Airline frustration!!!!!

My real issue is that thye just added this. This was not the policy when I purchased the tickets. I can see them adding this new fee later on, but people who already purchased their tickets shouldn't be charged. It's like WDW saying they are now going to charge you extra for toilet paper in the room....then telling you that if you pay in advance on the amount of rolls you are going to use you can pay half of what they will charge you when you get there. Toilet paper should be included with the hotel room just as checked baggage should be part of the price of an airline ticket.

I cannot believe they are CHARGING you for checked bags!!!!! Are they KIDDING?????????? Are they the only airline doing this? I haven't heard of this before!!

Dana, maybe try calling a supervisor over there and see what they say, since when you purchased the tickets, this was not disclosed to you.

Re: Airline frustration!!!!!

Maybe this new rule cannot be enforced with tickets bought before the date they changed their policy? Have you checked into that? Does that make any sense?

Dana, call them.

Retroactive fees and de facto policy is normally not allowed.

Um, legally, you have a contract at the time of purchase.

They cannot change without your consent, otherwise they are in breach.

That's my legal advice for the day...

Re: Airline frustration!!!!!

There is nothing on my receipt or on my original reservation that says I get checked bags included with the fee. I did call...was told that. I checked and there isn't anything that says they won't charge you for your checked luggage. There isn't anything on there that says I am allowed "X" amount of bags per person either... I was told I can pack all my things in one carry on bag and not be charged anything.. HELLO! I am the packin krackin...how am I going to fit all of that in a tiny, approved sized case? Whatever to all this.

I don't know if other airlines are doing this or not. I would prefer that they up the fee of the stupid flight and keep everything all in on fee instead of making us pay seperately. I feel ripped off to tell you the truth.

Re: Airline frustration!!!!!

Yeah, it sucks. The 3 Spirit flights I've taken to AC this year allowed you only one free bag but even that's changed now. They did raise the weight limit to 50lbs per bag, up from 35lbs per bag. I know this was the case a couple months ago for me when I brought a crapload of Tastykakes back in my suitcase and she weighed it: 36 lbs. They "let me go" as though I wouldn't have thrown out a $3 box of cupcakes to avoid paying $25.

For the record, it still comes out to the same as it was, which is $10, if you have two bags and pay on the web. Dana, you would've still paid the same under the old system for the two extra bags:$10 per 2nd bag each leg X 2 legs = $40. The only real change is if you only have one bag because now you have to pay $5.00.

Also, remember you can bring up to 40lbs in a carry on for EACH person so you can make up for some there, too. I ALWAYS bring a change of clothes in a carrry on, anyway. Lose your luggage one time and you learn to do that.

Remember, airlines couldn't care less about us. We're just cattle to them.
