Water in Checked Bags

Can you put plastic bottles of water in your checked bags for a flight? Would they explode under pressure altitude? Has anybody tried??

Re: Water in Checked Bags

I have actually done this with beer cans once. One of them sprung a leak, didnt even really explode, just a slow leak... but they are obviously more pressurized then a bottle of water. I bet you would have no problems with water.

Re: Water in Checked Bags

I don't think so. I've never checked bottled water, but I've taken bottled water and gatorade with me in the cabin, before the no-liquids law. They also keep canned soft drinks in the cabin, and I think that if anything would explode, that would be the first.

But... i've taken a bag of chips, and never opened them, and then I noticed that they got all puffy. The bag filled with air. heh...

Re: Water in Checked Bags

you will be fine. I used to work as Cabin Crew and regularly took bottled water away with me in my checked luggage. Never had an issue

The cabin is pressurized. Despite the fact that the plane is 20-40,000 feet up, the pressure makes it feel like 8-10,000 generally. The air is much thinner at higher altitudes and you've got to be pressurized or breathing oxygen.

If you empty a bottle at cruise altitude then put the top back on it will crush in when you get back to earth due to the lower pressure trapped inside and the higher pressure outside.

Re: Water in Checked Bags

Sharon does this all of the time. Just be careful of the weight. She did this one year, and it put the bag over the 50 pound limit, and the surplus charge was like $25!!!!!! That can but a lot of water at WDW.

Re: Water in Checked Bags

I packed a case of water in a soft sided cooler and checked it with no problems. I heard that you can order water from costco and they will deliver to your resort.....I haven't checked it out yet so I don't know if its true. I sure hope it is, I'll let you know what I find out.

Re: Water in Checked Bags

I personally think it would be less of a hassle to just do a grocery stop. Why weigh your luggage down and take the chance of one of them breaking?
