Airtran Seats

This will make you laugh:

If you fly Airtran, it is $7.50 extra to reserve (choose) your seat. It is $20 extra if it is an exit row!

Just nuts, nuts, nuts!

If just I were going, no sweat... I would not pay it. But how can I break up my family of 5 over $37.50!

Even the budget airlines aren't so buedget anymore. You may remember my thread about spirit charging me for checked luggage!....why can't they just pick a fare and have everything included? I feel kinda cheated with these other charges.

Re: Airtran Seats

You can still check in 24 hours before and select your seats for free!
But I also bit the bullet and paid the $7.50 to pre select our seats.
Better safe than sorry!

Re: Airtran Seats

Wow, I did not know that! We plan on flying Airtran again in April, but the fares are crazy high and I keep hoping for them to go down. They are about the only ones who fly non-stop from Indy.

Re: Airtran Seats

Ugh, I ran into this in August (but it was only $5 then!) At first, we weren't going to pay but then I was worried that we wouldn't be seated together so I bit the bullet and paid. I was glad I did because I saw lots of parties split up on the plane we were on.

Re: Airtran Seats

I think Northworst charges for guaranteed seat assignments now too. But its more than $7.50.

Soon there will be an extra charge for breathing.

Re: Airtran Seats

If people didn't pay the extra charge then there would be less to worry about. If you check in at the 24 hour mark I don't think youll have any problem. I didn't reserve seats for our December trip for the 4 of us so i will let you all know how it goes.

We didn't reserve seats and we were all together in one row both there and back. No problems at all - it could have been because September wasn't a super busy month though - I'm not really sure.

Maybe you could email the OTHER passengers on the flight and offer, for a small fee of course, NOT to sit your 5YO next to them. If you can only shake down, ah, provide this service to half of the 120 people on the plane you can fly for free.

Re: Airtran Seats

I love Airtran and reserving your seats used to be free! I better get a extra bag or pretzels for this.

I am glad Airtran does this

That way I can get the emergency row seats we need for my 6'4" husband. I always spring for the $20 per seat so we get exit rows. We are paying for premium economy on British Air when we fly to London this spring. We just did 14 + hours in coach to/from Kenya this summer and he almost could not walk from being so cramped up all that time.

They are all charging extra. I fly Spirit out of ACY and they are now charging for all checked bags.
