Southwest Baggage Rules

I was just checking the baggage limits for Southwest and read the following:

Maximum weight is 50 pounds and maximum size is 62 inches (length + width + height) per checked piece of luggage

I understand this to mean that the length plus the width plus the height cannot exceed 62 inches. Do they actually measure the luggage?

This is my first time flying with Southwest, not sure what to expect. I've seen size limits for carry-on, but I've never noticed for checked luggage before.

I don't want to arrive at the airport and have to pay "extra fees" for oversized luggage.

Thanks!

Re: Southwest Baggage Rules

we used our mega bag which holds all 6 of us for clothing and had no issues. They will measure if there is a question but the weight is a bigger issue since they weigh as they tag.

Re: Southwest Baggage Rules

We were fine on the way during our last trip but went overweight (our bags that is) on the way back. Keep in mind to leave room for souvenirs.

Re: Southwest Baggage Rules

I think weight is the bigger issue too- we have been 'overweight' on return trips from the USA but I can't say any airline has ever commented on the size of the luggage. However, all airlines are different and SW may be stricter.

I don't know about the size but they weigh all the luggage when they tag it (at least at our airport and Orlando). We saw several people who had to take things out of their bag at Christmas. One lady walked away with an arm load of clothes--I'm not sure what she was planning to do with 8 pounds of clothes but she took it all with her. We have a pretty good sized piece of luggage and stuffed it FULL and it weighed 46 or 47 pounds.

62 inches is a BIG bag. It is just about as a big as me. We have been overweight going down 1 year (i took a lot of bottled water with us.... Tim was not very happy when he found out why). We now bring a bag with us that is almost empty with us, which comes back full every time.

Re: Southwest Baggage Rules

I have never seen them actually measure at bag at SW, but they have weighed our bags every time.

Also keep in mind, its now 1 piece of checked luggage per passenger, $25 for each additional bag.

I'm with everyone else, I've never seen them measure luggage, just weigh it.

You're scarring me lovemysons. The Southwest website says you can check 2 bags per customer. Where did you hear 1 bag?

I sure hope it's 2 or I'm going to have to go buy some bigger luggage. We only have one really large one, which I measured this morning and it measures just 62 inches when you add the width, height and length.

Two nights ago on the nightly news. It might not have gone into effect yet. I did notice the website still says 2 bags.

Re: Southwest Baggage Rules

We checked more than 1 bag per person in December when we flew with SWA.

We posted at the same time--man, that stinks! We usually check 4 bags when we fly. Another reason to get another BIG suitcase.

Re: Southwest Baggage Rules

Just spoke to Southwest and they confirmed that each passenger is allowed 2 checked bags that may not exceed 50 lbs each or 62 inches when you add height, width and length. You are also allowed 1 carry-on.

The agent said that it used to be 3 bags each, but that it went down by one.

That's good news. I remember the 3 bag rule and understand that change.
