I am a Knucklehead! Help!

Hello all. I am a brand new poster here although not a new Disney fan!

I made a big mistake. A biggy. I live in Ontario Canada. We fly out of Buffalo as we are only a few short hours from Buffalo. We can often get cheap flights via Air Tran or Southwest or even JEt BLue. I have been watching fares for MONTHS every day!

On August 13 I found a very low fare ($65) from Buffalo to ORlando for my family of 4. I wasn't lucky about the return on September 28 so was back and forth between so many sites . I finally found a low fare (or so I thought) of $104 with Jet blue. I was thrilled overall. Now here's the problem:

I just realized I booked the second flight on the 28th from Buffalo to Orlando instead of the other way around. I know SO STUPID. I called Jet Blue and they will change the flight on the 28th so I can actually get home but they want another $585 (transfer fees and the difference in return flights).

I can find a cheaper flight on Southwest return (the right cities on the right day!) for $119..should I just book that? I would only be out $500 rather than $600...

HElp...

Christa

I am sick. Really..actually nauseous. I have saved for this trip and now....ACK!

Hello and welcome to the Buzz. If you have not paid for anything, then walk way from the higher fare. But is they have your money, they may charge a fee to cancel the reservations etc. I would call back and push for a lower fare based on SW costs. They might match that one. Be tough.

Hi! Welcome to MB.

We fly from Buffalo pretty often too (so much cheaper than Toronto!)
I would take the Southwest flight since its cheaper. But see if you can get a partial credit by cancelling your Jet Blue flight.

Good luck!

Welcome to Mousebuzz!!

Your situation sounds tough but the key is to think positive. I would go with the SW return. If JetBlue is unwilling to refund your money then maybe they can issue some sort of travel voucher instead. This way they don't lose your money and you have another savings for your next WDW trip!!

This sounds like good advice.

If it makes you feel any better, a few years ago I nailed a great rate for flight, very proud of myself and enjoyed telling anyone interested all about it. I fixed the departure time in my head as 7AM, and we arrived at the appropriate 1 hour advance time (it was a few years ago) with big smiles... only to be told our flight was taxiing down the runway as we speak It was a 6 AM flight!

Total panic, red face, how do I tell them we can't go... I immediately sent 3 kids, and glaring husband off to get breakfast while I scrambled for an alternative. There was a 7 AM flight, lots of space, no problem Mrs. W. we just need $635... so much for the great rate!.

And I had to wear that mistake for several years afterwards.

You have my deepest sympathy Find the best answer and remember to enjoy your trip.

Re: I am a Knucklehead! Help!

Thanks to all. Jet Blue was SO UNHELPFUL. They suggested i change my travel arrangements (as if I can? With a Free meal deal? Vacation time etc) I will book the new flight through SOuthwest (and then cancel the jetblue flight and see if I can get any kind of credit...flight appears to be nonrefundable though)...I have learned my lesson. So much for all that extra spending money however. Why is stupidity so expensive.

Re: I am a Knucklehead! Help!

A few years back my dh and I had to cancel a non-refundable trip. They did charge us $50 per ticket, but then gave us a voucher for the rest to be used within a year. I know they're more hard up for money than they were back then, but hopefully they'll do the same for you. Good luck and Welcome to MB.

Welcome to Mousebuzz.

I agree you should just book with SW.

No worries, we probably all have some type of goof-up story regarding vacation.

Good luck!

Re: I am a Knucklehead! Help!

Oh, I am so, so sorry!!! I was recently about to fly AirTran because it was a little cheaper than Southwest. I just couldn't get comfortable with their cancellation policy (what if a kid gets sick or there is water in my basement or...really, I am actually an optomistic person)--so I spent a little more with Southwest.

Just try to take my father's advice..."Honey, it's too far from your heart to be serious." He always helped put things in perspective.

And it sounds like no matter what, you STILL will be able to go see the Mouse!

I'm so sorry this happend!
Did you ask to speak to a supervisor?? It was an honest mistake. I hate that you are out all that money. Maybe they can wave the change fees for you atleast - then you would only need to pay the fare difference. I would be begging for the money back.
Hope you have better luck!

Perhaps a little off topic but two words.....travel insurance

For the little extra money it costs the peace of mind is fantastik! From flight delays, to weather, to illness, to lost luggage you are covered. We have had to use ours several times over the years on various trips and man-oh-man it can turn a nightmare into a walk in the park so easily. I know it is hard to justify spending money on a big maybe but isn't that what homeowners and life insurance is?

Re: I am a Knucklehead! Help!

I am so sorry this happened to you! What finally happened? I know they have been raising the cancellation/change fees.

The tickets for our upcoming trip were a huge pain! I had to change my mom's flight 3 times - did not have to pay anything because the first 2 airlines changed the times several times and on one they even had her do a 4 hour layover even though we had booked her a direct flight. For all the stress I finally got her a flight at the time she wanted and it was actually cheaper then the other 2 would have been.

I really hope you were able to figure it all out- you are going to see Mickey and that will make everything all better!

I would rebook, with Southwest and used the tickets for airtran at a later date. That way you won't be out any money. Just use them for something else.
