The great monorails of WDW
my monorail page
I have always loved this system. I was very happy when it was expended for Epcot, I just wish they would expend it even more. |

Incidently, the CM also told us that many years ago the company that originally built the monorail went out of business. Realizing the potential for future parts shortages, Disney bought their entire inventory and today manufactures their own replacement parts to keep the system running. I guess in a way I'm glad monorails didn't become the worldwide transportation Walt envisioned. If they had, the monorails at Disney would be blah, instead of something to get excited about. I spend a part of my Disney trips just taking the family around on the monorail.

Re: The great monorails of WDW
Nics pics! As a kid the monorails were my favorite part of the trip! Anyway, I just got back from WDW in August and while I was there heard some interesting news about the monorail. During a boat trip from POR to DTD the boat captain was giving out all kinds of information about the park (he used to drive the monorail a few years ago himself). One of the items he told us was that Disney has a 10 year plan on the books now to connect the rest of the theme parks to the main monorail line! That would be awesome! I would like to see that happen. That would make staying in the Deluxe resorts more that worth the cost! On another note, I remember years ago that Disney had talked about running a monorail to the Orlando airport, but had issues because of the new Orange County Convention Center saying NO! Who knows! That kind of convenience from the airport would be great!

Re: The great monorails of WDW
Great video clip. My boys just love the monorails. They would be happy just riding them all day. One of our favorite moments from our last trip was a ride up front on our way to see Illuminations at Epcot. The view from the front cab is spectacular, especially once it gets dark out. We still talk about that ride.

Re: The great monorails of WDW
One rumor I was told while on the Illumination Cruise, our CM captain told me that the black square that is built into each side of the Dolphin resort, was actually design to be removed(opened up), if they ever expanded the Monorail route. The Monorail would travel through the resort - just like the Contemporary. Seems a bit high IMO, but you never know.

The guy that was giving us the information definitely acted like he knew what was going on! He was an older gentleman who retired many years ago, and decided to work at Disney to occupy his time. He drove the monorail for several years, he ddrove buses for several years, and now he was a boat captain! Just about covers all the transportaion options doesn't it! I think his information was probably pretty good...

Fantastic study of the monorails. They are beautiful. They are magic.
