Spaceship Mountain in Epcot?
I once heard a rumor that Spaceship Earth, to attract more tourists and thrill seekers alike, was going to be turned into a roller coaster
. Though I now know that there's a better chance of Havana getting a blizzard, I'd greatly appreciate anyone who could tell me what that was all about. Maybe I dreamed it up , but if it was a dream it was a nightmare. |

I don't believe it for a minute.

Re: Spaceship Mountain in Epcot?
I have also heard this! But I don't see how they could tear open spaceship earth.. take everything out of it (what ever is in there, ((never been to WDW)) then build a rollercoaster. I Highly Doubt it. Where would a lift hill be? There's really not much room for a rollercoaster considering the shape of the building! But ya never know these days.. Disney has alot of tricks.

Re: Spaceship Mountain in Epcot?
Hate to be the voice of dissent here, but it's true. Although what the Imagineers planned for Spaceship Earth wasn't really a rollercoaster but more of a hybrid simulator/rollercoaster attraction called Time Racers. This project was part of the much larger "Project Gemini" that was to have completely rehabbed and refurbished Future World at Epcot. Read more about this at the following link:
http://www.jimhillmedia.com/mb/artic...cle.php?ID=332 You have to keep in mind that this article was written back in Feb of 2003, so things have changed a bit since then. Unfortunately, Project Gemini was really a "pie-in-the-sky" design of what WDI could have done given an unlimited budget. We all know that things like that don't happen anymore at the Walt Disney Company, so it's unclear right now what, if anything, will result from the Project Gemini proposal. I, personally, would have loved to see Future World revamped as proposed.

to do something like that, it seems that SSE would have to be gutted....and although I bet it's structually sound enough to take that, rebuilding inside a set, unchanging area would be a nightmare

They did do some reasearch on this, but determined that if they turned it into a roller coaster it would decrease the stability of the ride so they decided against any further research.

Re: Spaceship Mountain in Epcot?
yeah, in order to keep the stability, what parts they could take out would basically be the track and the cosmetics of the ride. Besides, the space for a rollar coaster of any length would be severely limited, and the ride capacity itself would not be large. I don't know...call me old fashioned, but like SSE just the way it is....even though it is outdated!
OffKilterFan but I have to admit, the first time I rode it, I was convinced there was going to be some sort of rollar coaster like drop! I could just hear the narrator going "but all through history, one thing has remained the same: gravity" and then the car plunges....haha!

Re: Spaceship Mountain in Epcot?
Please leave SSE alone. If they want to make a coaster ride I would love to see one with a Monsters Inc. theme. After watching this movie with my kids this weekend I found myself wanting to ride on a door with Mike and Skully (sp). Only problem is that would have to be done at MGM and I don't know if that is possible.
